San Diego Comic-Con 2011 – Square Enix Play Arts Kai Halo, Street Fighter, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and More

Square Enix is a global media and entertainment company known primarily for its video games, but to me they’re the toy company that the other toy companies should dread if they share licenses. Because when you’re stacked up against Square Enix’s Play Arts Kai line of figures, you’re going to have a hard time outdoing them.

Yeah, these figures are expensive and in an oddball 8-inch scale, but they are also the complete package – extremely detailed sculpts with great paint apps and super articulation to boot. And with shared licenses such as Halo: Reach, Street Fighter, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and more, these will be impossible to ignore.

Halo: Reach figures are all available now, including the SDCC and NYCC exclusive Red and Blue Team figures. I like McFarlane’s Halo toys, but with more plastic to work with, these have got even more detail. And you can’t really beat how the articulation works on them.

They’ve got a lot of video game licenses, and I’m also particularly enamored with the Street Fighter figures. Ryu looks really good, and I think they completely knocked it out of the park with the women. I loved SOTA’s Street Fighters and thought NECA did a nice job with the license too, but I think these are gonna rock.

It’s only Thursday, but I am pretty sure the Batman and Joker from Batman: Arkham Asylum are going to be my best in show pick – and we’ve still got a long way to go before the last reveal is revealed. The really crazy thing is that almost everyone has got a piece of this license – DC Direct and Mattel have lots of figures already in the market or in the planing stage, but I can’t wait for these.

Best in show! Who’s with me?

  1. Dude! That’s a Drake figure, from Uncharted 3! Awesome. That Batman is killer too! What is the scale of the figures?

  2. I’m pretty happy with the Batman figs as best of show. And I love the Street Fighter girls. They’re out of my preferred scale so I’m not buying them – too bad – but they’re awesome.

  3. This is awesome! Thank you for this wicked article. I’m really diggin’ Batman, Joker, Kratos and the white Halo suit figure. Do you know when these will be available?
