Mattel Announces DC Universe Classics Doomsday Unleashed after Jail-Suit Sells Out

Doomsday Unleashed vs Bound

Mattel has been leveraging the “All Men Must Die” marketing from Game of Thrones for its Masters of the Universe Classics line, and now it seems like they’re going the Lord of the Rings route for DC – because they’ve just added yet another “final figure” to DC Universe Classics. At first it was the Damien Wayne Robin to close out the line. Then Super Powers. Then the Jail-Suit “Bound” Doomsday. And now, after another fade to white – Doomsday Unleashed.

Celebrating the official end of the Four Horsemen 6″ DC Universe line, Mattel is excited to partner with Warner Bros. and DC Comics to bring you the long-in-coming “Unleashed” Doomsday figure! He will be available this winter in an amazing window box diorama as a standalone day-of purchase! Images and full details to come, but we couldn’t wait to share this news with our fans! This final figure will celebrate the end of a fantastic toy line.

Sure, I know Unleashed is what I wanted from the start, but I can’t help but feel like I’ve been manipulated more than just a little bit. When the collector community questioned the “Bound” exclusive for this year’s SDCC, Mattel told us that because we didn’t buy into another year of Classics (yes, it was our fault again), they couldn’t make the Doomsday most of us wanted. And now, as that exclusive has sold out, Mattel finds a way to get Unleashed to Mattycollector. Curiouser and curiouser!

Of course, this story wouldn’t be complete without Mattel first denying Unleashed was on its way.

Mattel Unleashed Doomsday

This is a mock up we put together to show internally and to our licensor partners what “could have been” a package idea had the sub sold. The sculpt as you recall was shown at Sdcc and we still have it of course! We often do test proof of concepts but try to always avoid showing them to prevent and incorrect info or jumping to conclusions.

We’d of course have loved to do this for the sub or Sdcc but alas the sub did not hit the numbers we needed!

  1. As annoying as it is, I can’t wait to have that figure–ESPECIALLY if it still comes with that torn Superman cape!  Which in turn makes me realize I would have been very interested in some non-caped figures of Superman and Batman from the DC line…oh well.

  2. Does anyone know the price point on this thing? I imagine that with the regular figures, including a Mr. Mxyzptlk, coming in at around $30, plus S&H and tax, that this will be close to $100, especially with the whole not-buying-into-the-sub-at-100% thing they can rub into our faces. My feelings on this coming to pass are a mixed bag, especially as he’s also kind of too big.

  3. It should be no more than $50. The containment suit version was the SDCC exclusive and it was $35. $100 would be ridiculous.

  4. Can’t wait to get this. I’m used to Mattel acting like themselves, I’m just glad they’re finally releasing the Doomsday figure.

  5. This doesn’t have anything to do with the toy but does anyone know which superman comic the above picture is from?

  6. @Happy Birthday Roboto It’s a photoshop, both pics of Doomsday come from the Death or Superman story arc. I’m not sure of the smaller Doomsday, but the larger one flying backwards is from The Adventures of Superman #497.

  7. @clark Thanks dude, I was really confused because it looked familiar and at the same time I couldn’t quite place where I’d seen it. You know not only have I read the Death of Superman dozens of times, I was reading that exact issue (Adventures of Superman 497) just before I went online and saw your comment! Weird!

  8. Happy Birthday Roboto – hey guys, here’s the source for the “better” Doomsday 😉

seeing it again reminded me of how much time I had to spend ‘shopping it, so I’m glad it might be mistaken for something that was really in the comics.
