NYCC 2015: Bandai S.H. Figuarts TMNT, DragonBall Z, Sailor Moon and More

NYCC 2015 - Bandai Tamashii Nations Bluefin (1 of 31)

The Bluefin booth is always a favorite stop due to its wide variety of Bandai’s Tamashii Nations S.H. Figuarts licenses. The unveiling of a retro cartoon-based Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line was the highlight for many – for me it’s got the nostalgia factor, but I’m vary happy with the comics-based line we got from NECA and the upcoming Turtles from Mondo. Still, I know this will fill a gap for many collectors looking for super-poseable Turtles from the old cartoon.

There was plenty more to see, including DragonBall Z, Sailor Moon, the Star Wars “realization” samurai-themed line (with new Boba Fett), Naruto, and Super Mario Bros. The Nintendo line adds more characters via another diorama set and a new Bowser figure. And, I am really looking forward to that Bruce Lee figure, even though it will likely be a standalone figure with other Bruce Lee variants possible.

SDCC 2015: Bandai Kicks Ass with S.H. Figuarts Bruce Lee

SDCC 2015 - Bandai Tamashii Nations S.H. Figuarts Bruce Lee

Martial arts icon Bruce Lee would have been 75 years old this year. To celebrate this anniversary, Bandai’s Tamashii Nations announced the S.H. Figuarts Bruce Lee at San Diego Comic-Con. His daughter, Shannon Lee, was at the Bluefin booth for the unveiling of the prototype.

The action figure is based on his appearance in Enter the Dragon. No word yet on price or release date, but we’ll keep a look out – I imagine this will move fast in pre-orders. No idea what Bandai’s license covers, but I’d be surprised if we don’t see a Game of Death figure to follow this one at some point down the line.

SDCC 2015: Toys R Us Hosts Exclusives from Bandai, Hasbro, Mattel and More

SDCC 2015 Toys R Us Exclusives - Star Wars, Batgirl, and Power Rangers

Toy R Us is renewing its attempt to woo collectors by establishing a “Collector Vector” shop within both its traditional and online stores, and participating in San Diego Comic-Con with ten exclusives from a variety of toy manufacturers. While I’m doing fewer traditional toy runs now, I’ve been to my local TRU recently and have not noticed any change – but online they’ve established a Collector Vector search grouping that currently includes over 200 products and a landing page for their Con exclusives.

While I think TRU will continue to struggle to differentiate itself with collectors, the Con exclusives will help drive some traffic their way. The list includes the Yvonne Craig Batgirl from the ’60s Batman show (thankfully individually-carded and not in a 3-pack with Batman and Robin), a Star Wars Black Series Rancor set in the 3.75-inch scale, a Power Rangers exclusive, and more. They’ll be available at the Entertainment Earth booth (#2343) at the show and online at Toysrus.com/ComicConvention from Thursday, July 9 through Sunday, July 12, while supplies last, of course.

It’s an impressive list of exclusives – TRU may be on the decline, but they still have some sway with the toy companies.

SDCC 2015: S.H. Figuarts Goku (Frieza Saga) and Sailor Moon (Imposter) Exclusives

SDCC 2015 SH Figuarts Goku (Frieza Saga) and Nise Sailor Moon exclusives

We’d previously seen the S.H. Figuarts Frieza Saga Goku exclusive featured on Facebook, but now we’ve got hi res shots of it and the Sailor Moon exclusive from Bluefin, the US distributor for Bandai’s Tamashii Nations. They included the official description for Goku, but omitted one for Sailor Moon – unfortunately I know little about the property. It’s billed as the “Imposter version” on the packaging.

If you are at the show and purchase either exclusive at the Bluefin booth at #3545, you’ll get a 1Up Mushroom from their Super Mario line as a gift while supplies last.
