Toy Fair 2014: LEGO Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ghostbusters, and LEGO Movie – Official PR and Pics

We caught the announcements of the first Guardians of the Galaxy set and the CUUSOO Ghostbusters ECTO-1 as they hit the interwebs as Toy Fair kicked off. LEGO was kind enough to send official press releases and hi-res pics for those sets and more. Some highlights from LEGO:

THE LEGO MOVIE is currently the #1 movie in America and additionally, we announced a new set coming out in March, MetalBeard’s Sea Cow. This massive, highly detailed set will be sure to turn heads as when built, contains 2,741 pieces and even includes Emmet’s iconic double-decker couch.

The LEGO Group and Lucasfilm announced new LEGO Star Wars sets based on the upcoming Star Wars Rebels television series, launching this fall on the Disney channel. Additionally, the announcement coincides with the 15th anniversary of the LEGO Star Wars collection, the first licensed property ever to come to life in LEGO form.

This morning, the LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1 set was unveiled for the first time. Be careful, your friends might start calling you after seeing that you have this set because of the realistic details included, like the paranormal detection equipment and proton packs!

The LEGO Group shared that they will have 3 sets based on the much anticipated movie, Guardians of the Galaxy coming out this summer. Right now we have only images and info for one of the LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy products, so please stay tuned for updates in the coming months.

Toy Fair 2014: LEGO Reveals Guardians of the Galaxy and Ghostbusters Sets

One of my biggest disappointments being snowed out of Toy Fair this year is missing the LEGO showroom. I’ve been a lifelong fan of the building sets, and fell pretty hard for their foray into licensed products many years ago with Star Wars LEGO sets. With this year’s Toy Fair showing, LEGO has extended their Marvel license to include Guardians of the Galaxy, and added a fan favorite with a new Ghostbusters set.

While we can expect three sets of GotG as part of the growing LEGO Marvel license, Ghostbusters will likely be limited to the ECTO-1 set, as it’s a product of LEGO’s CUUSOO program (where users submit ideas to be potentially turned into LEGO sets), like last year’s Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine.

Masters of the Universe Classics Modulok Headlines February Sale; Mattel Epic Creations for Valentines Day?

With just one brand to drive MattyCollector, it’ll be a hit or miss affair each month for casual Masters fans. With the Masters of the Universe Classics Modulok on the docket, it should prove to be a popular month, even if the $44 price tag will discourage some. Princess of Power’s Glimmer, and the mini He-Man and Mer-Man 2-pack round out the new offerings.

In what will be a monthly reminder for sad DC Universe Classics collectors, Mattel continues to unload the remaining customer service stock. This month it’s Larfleeze and Phantom Stranger. And, Epic Creations remain in stock – Castle Grayskull, the Neutrino Wand, and the Batman Utility Belt don’t seem to be in any danger of sellout, despite the claims of limited availability back in December.

The Mattycollector February sale Early Access starts tomorrow at 8AM, and here’s the link for the February bundle page for the all-access sale opening Monday at 9AM. Sadly, Modulok and Glimmer are not available in Early Access.

No Masters of the Universe Classics Two Bad, But Ram Man Returns for Mattycollector January Sale

I’ve been critical in the past that Mattel’s Early Access for Mattycollector subscribers provided little value. However, I can’t really say that about their first sale for 2014 – the remaining Ram Man stock goes up for grabs first in Early Access, and I’m guessing he’ll be gone in a few minutes – way before everyone else gets a shot the following day. Add the fact that the Club Eternia offering, the very popular Two Bad, does not have any inventory available for day of sales, and subscribers to Mattycollector’s last remaining club should be starting off the year happy. Whether this is good for the line overall – I’m curious what you guys think.

The DC Universe Classics Captain Marvel Jr. (aka Freddy Freeman), MOTUC Dekker, and the Ghostbusters Ecto Goggles will also be on sale. Here’s the link to Early Access for January, which opens tomorrow at 8AM PST. All access opens up Wednesday at 9AM PST. Let’s hope this sale does better for Mattel than their December sale – last I checked, none of the items had sold out or even been tagged with the warning of low stock. I was able to add 99 Castle Grayskulls (the order limit) to my cart – $29,700 plus $2,499 for shipping (and don’t forget sales tax!) and they can be yours!

Mattel Missing the Mark with Epic Creations?

Maybe I’ve been conditioned over the years by quick sell-outs, but it was still somewhat of a shock to check in on the Mattycollector December sale to find that the big three Epic Creations items, the Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskull, and the prop replicas for the Batman Utility Belt and the Ghostbusters Neutrino Wand, are all still in stock. None of the three are even at the point where they’ve got the special tags indicating they’re “Almost Gone.” This is particularly surprising for the Castle – from the point of pre-order through the pre-hype for this sale, Mattel has consistently said that they’d have just a very limited amount of Castles for day-of sales.

If we don’t see this change in the short term, here’s what I’ve reasoned could be behind the slower than expected sales.
