SDCC 2014: Hasbro Star Wars Black (Preview Night)

SDCC 2014 - Hasbro Star Wars Black Preview Night

Fans of Hasbro’s 6-inch lines may be underwhelmed by what was shown for their Star Wars Black Series 6-inchers at Preview Night. No new reveals, but I was happy to see the deluxe figures – both Jabba and the Speeder Bike look awesome – and next wave of single-packed figures on display.

Paint apps still seem to be the weak link in terms of production quality – and it stands out most on the human figures with their G.I. Joe-styled eyes, like on Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker. Darth Vader looks good, but he does seem a little bloated with the cloth apps. The standout for me is Chewbacca.

Overall, with so little on display tonight, it does hint that the retail channel is a little backed up on this line. But stay tuned – Hasbro’s Star Wars panel is on Friday, so we can hope for a few more reveals then.

Toy Fair 2014: Big Things Coming for Star Wars Black Series 6-Inchers

STAR WARS BLACK SERIES DELUXE JABBA A7809

In the past, I’d referred to Hasbro’s Star Wars Black Series (the 6-inchers) as “Star Wars Legends” insofar as the brand’s first foray into the 6-inch scale has taken strong cues from the Marvel line in terms of its sculpt and articulation. But despite an assumed softness in the age-old 3.75-inch scale that I think prompted the new line, we shouldn’t forget that the brand is more like the Empire, able to take grab shelf space and subvert it to its will.

So while Marvel Legends relies on programs like Build-a-Figure to sweeten the deal for consumers and retailers, Star Wars needs no such enticements. The “big” reveal for this Toy Fair is the introduction of the Black Series Deluxe line extension, offering a vehicle for Hasbro to bring higher price point items into the retail mix. If this were Marvel, we’d have a Build-a-Jabba; the Star Wars brand allows for a shelf-grab for more of your collector dollars.

CC36: Vintage Kenner Star Wars by Iron-Cow Productions

icp-header

Iron-Cow Prod. is pleased to showcase its new additions to the Vintage Kenner Star Wars action figure line! These figures are meant to fill in some gaps, expand the line a bit, and generally have some fun revisiting childhood nostalgia. When possible, I left any paint scrapes on the original figures intact for any intentional visual aging effect.

Late Adopter? Might be Time to Jump on the Star Wars Black Series Bandwagon

I’ve been browsing looking for online deals today – pretty lazily, because with online shopping it’s not too hard to fill the gaps in the toy collection. But I did see some big price drops for wave 1 of the 6-inch Star Wars Black Series at Amazon. Now, I’ve already got the figures, but for those of you who have been holding off, now might be the time to get in. The figures are really great, and for $9.99 each, you can pretend you’re buying them a long time ago and far, far away – while the sting of George Lucas trashing your childhood with the prequels was still fresh!

The only exception, naturally, is the Sandtrooper – still a couple bucks off at $17.99, but people have been army building.

Star Wars Black Series 2014 Wave 1 Hi-Res Pics

Star Wars Black Series 6-inch 2014 Wave 1

We previously swiped (the low res) shots from YodasNews.com of what we were calling “wave 3” of the 6-inch Star Wars Black Series figures. Hasbro has shown us some love and shared what we’re going to start calling “2014 wave 1” of the series – that’s the official word from Hasbro.

This wave still includes the regular Stormtrooper, Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi, and Bespin Luke Skywalker.  In hi-res, it’s a little harder to overlook the sad-face paint job on the eyes. Obi Wan and Luke are sad! I hope that as this line continues to succeed that we see some increased paint apps there.
