Marvel Universe Covers Contest – the Winners

It’s time for us to announce the winners of the Marvel Universe Covers Contest, brought to you by the Hasbro Marvel team and the guys who run ActionFigurePics.com and TheFwoosh.com.  We had a very tough time picking just three winners, because all the covers entered this year were really great.  So we’ll be adding three more prize winners for honorable mentions – but don’t get your hopes up guys, because your prizes will be coming from AFP’s Free Stuff stash.

Without further ado, here are your winners!

First Prize: Calbretto - Irredeemable Ant-Man #1
First Prize: Calbretto - Irredeemable Ant-Man #1

Calbretto blew us away with his composition of Robert Kirkman’s first issue of The Irredeemable Ant-Man.  Ant-Man is known for his exaggerations, so while we can’t find 23 villains in the cover, we really enjoyed seeing so many Marvel baddies from Hasbro, Toy Biz, and Diamond Select being crushed by Calbretto’s custom Eric O’Grady Ant-Man.

He’ll be receiving a prize pack consisting of all three Hasbro / Marvel Comic Con Exclusives (the 70th Anniversary Invaders 4-pack, the single-carded gray scale Captain America, and the Wolverine Mighty Mugg) plus the new wave of Marvel Legends 2-packs.  Congrats!

San Diego Comic-Con Marvel Select Pics

You remember that Marvel Select Thing prototype that Art Asylum blogged about a couple of days ago?  A painted prototype was on hand at Diamond Select Toys’ booth at Comic-Con.  Their display cases are always tough to shoot – the lighting isn’t that great.  But at least the Thing and Abomination look outstanding!

One of my nits with most Things that have seen plastic – they’re too big, for me at least.  This one is massive.

Marvel Select Thing – Early Sculpt from Art Asylum

Art Asylum has blogged about their work on a Thing for Marvel Select.  People have said that they thought this figure was canceled, but I haven’t heard one way or another.

My big pet peeve with the Things we’ve gotten in Marvel Legends (and Universe) is that they’re too tall.  Sure, he’s bulky, but he’s not as tall as Reed.  So this is a beautiful sculpt, but at Select scale I’m guessing it’ll be much too big to be compatible with my Legends collection.

Thank you Thing

This is way early in the development stage, but the Marvel Select Thing is coming along so beautifully that I just couldn’t resist sharing a look with you. Enjoy.

Marvel Select Abomination Press Pic

TNI has posted a press pic of the prototype of DST’s Abomination from the Marvel Select line.  This is a welcome return for Diamond to the larger scale figures that work in both the Select and Legends scales.

I really liked the Abomination from the Onslaught wave of Marvel Legends but there is something very satisfying about the proportions, sculpt, and paint that makes this very appealing.  Of course, this won’t have nearly the amount of articulation that it’s predecessor in ML had, but I don’t think he needs it.  I hope this comes out looking this good in production.
