This Day in Star Wars: August 13, 2013 (Well, Yesterday Actually)

This-day-in-Star-Wars

Yesterday afternoon, I saw this image of a TIE Fighter on the Gentle Giant Facebook page. And as I was thinking about how old the date on the picture made me feel, the UPS truck pulled up and dropped off the first of three boxes with the new Star Wars Black Series action figures from Hasbro. There’s nothing like toys to make you feel young again!

Thinking that this must be the workings of the living Force, I decided to add another auspicious date in Star Wars history. You don’t want to know how long it took, with me bumbling around in Photoshop. Suffice to say, I feel old again.

Incidentally, it’s Amazon that started filling orders first (and I don’t know why they shipped my order in 3 separate boxes) – I had found it available for pre-order there first, and then at ToysRUs.com later, and ended up with orders with both. I went back to check, and it looks like all the Star Wars Black Series 6-inch figures are back in stock at Amazon, for the regular $19.99 price. If you are still looking, that’s the best way I’ve found to get them individually (letting you army build the Sandtroopers.) My wallet has a bad feeling about this.

Hasbro Reveals New Black Series Figures at Star Wars Celebration Europe

Star Wars Celebration Star Wars Celebration1

It feels like we just got with Hasbro unveiling a bunch of upcoming Star Wars Black Series figures at San Diego Comic-Con. But there’s no rest for the weary (in this case, Hasbro) – they just unveiled more Star Wars figures from both of its Black Series lines at Star Wars Celebration Europe. In the six-inch line, it’s Obi-Wan Kenobi from Revenge of the Sith (we got a preview of Obi-Wan in the Hasbro booth at SDCC), a good old-fashioned army builder Stormtrooper, and Luke Skywalker from Empire Strikes Back. Presumably these are from the third wave, which should hit retail in 1Q 2014.

In the 3 3/4-inch line, it’s Mace Windu, Darth Plagueis, Vizam, and Commander Neyo. Mace features Clone Trooper gauntlets in which he kicked ass in Clone Wars.

Hasbro Star Wars Black Series Wave 2 Pre-Orders Are Up

I wasn’t lucky enough to find the first wave of the Star Wars Black Series, but while these aren’t the figures I’m (currently) looking for, you can pre-order the second wave of figures now. Cases of Star Wars Black Series Wave 2 are up for pre-order at Entertainment Earth and BigBadToyStore for $79.99.

Since there’s no army-builder like the Sandtrooper in this wave, cases (which are evenly packed with one of each figure) may be the way to go. But if you want to order them individually, then BBTS has listings for Han, Leia, Greedo, and Boba Fett (although he is already pre-sold out.) Both venues list wave 2 as coming in November this year.

Hasbro Star Wars Black Series 6-Inch Figures Found at Target

Hasbro Star Wars Black Series Target Find 1

On an evening diaper run for my 1-year old, I stumbled upon some 3.75 inch Star Wars Black figures at Target. I decided to have someone check the stockroom for me for some 6-inch figures and bam, an employee came out with a case with one of each. Really unexpected find as I haven’t heard of any retail sightings yet, but I’m glad I decided to check!

Here’s a couple of quick pics! Expect a full review of the figures soon!

Hasbro Star Wars Black Series Buy One Get One Half Off at ToysRUs.com

Update: Looks like the Star Wars Black Series figures are now out of stock or have been removed from the TRU system.

I guess with the launch of Hasbro’s Star Wars Black Series being imminent, more of the online retailers are starting to promote them. I was talking to Sandman last night about Amazon reducing its price on Star Wars Black Series figures to $19.99, when he pointed out that TRU is running a Buy One Get 50% Off deal on Star Wars. Like Amazon, each figure is $19.99.

One catch is that is that each of the 6-inch figures is limited to one per order – so if you are looking to army-build Sandtroopers, you need to split up your orders. For example, you could get 3 Sandtroopers by placing separate orders for Luke, Darth Maul, and R2-D2, getting the 50% off deal on each order but adding a bit extra on the shipping side. I went through the exercise and I still saved about $15 even with the extra shipping vs. Amazon. Sandman also did a comparison with Star Wars Black Series at HasbroToyShop – there’s a 10% off coupon there, but if you’re buying a set of four this TRU deal still wins.

Another downside is that pre-orders at TRU are now moving out on ship date. Mine showed as 9/3, so I’m still toying with going back to Amazon if they’ll ship sooner. First world problems!
