Toy Fair 2014: Pulp Fiction Licenses Multiple Action Figure Lines for 20th Anniversary

Funko ReAction Pulp Fiction

It’s “When did I get so old?” time – Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction turns twenty this year. That’s twenty years since John Travolta’s career was revitalized so he could get out of movies like the Look Who’s Talking franchise and go on to star in fare like Michael (the angel movie) and Battlefield Earth. Ok, so maybe Pulp Fiction was more of a blip on his career path.

To capitalize on our nostalgia factor, two companies – Funko and Diamond Select Toys – have jumped onto the Pulp Fiction license, and are producing four separate action figure lines to capture our collector dollars.

Toy Fair 2014: Funko Announces Magic: The Gathering Figure Lines

Funko Magic the Gathering Planeswalker Legacy Action Figures

It looks like Funko is determined to move into the super-articulated action figure space. They recently announced Legacy figures for Game of Thrones, and they’re adding a second fantasy license with Magic: The Gathering Planeswalker. Like the Game of Thrones line, these have also been sculpted by Gentle Giant.

Sandman had asked Hasbro about the license back at SDCC (where they had produced an exclusive card set) – they indicated at the time that they thought the market wasn’t quite big enough for figures. I suppose Funko doesn’t mind going after smaller licenses that don’t have the broad appeal required by a big company like Hasbro.

The Legacy figures will hit shelves in August. Funko will also be producing Magic figures in their popular Pop! Vinyl line, due in April.

Toy Fair 2014: Funko Announces Game of Thrones Legacy

Funko Game of Thrones Legacy - Tyrion Lannister

Sandman has been raving to me about Funko’s Game of Thrones Legacy figures. Apparently, Funko held back the official announcement for the line to land just in advance of the release of Season 3 of Game of Thrones on DVD (Tuesday, February 18) and Toy Fair this weekend – however, the announcement did not beat the figures to stores. Apparently, large wooden ships carrying the first assortment of action figures has already laid siege to Barnes and Noble, where you can find the first wave exclusively until it hits more broadly at retail in early March.

The figures look awesome and have some great articulation (we need to convince Sandman to take some pics) – no doubt thanks to Gentle Giant, the design studio that seems to be behind almost everything super-articulated and super-realistic these days. Early reports are that you should be careful with the joints, however, as there’s some brittle clear PVC that tends to break. Hopefully that gets addressed as production continues. We’ll be looking for coverage of the second wave, so stay tuned for more Game of Thrones.

Marvel Store Black Friday 20% Off Sale

marvel_hp_thanks_20131128

I’m too grumpy to deal with crowds and waiting in line, so on Black Friday I’m happy to look for online deals. The official Marvel Store is holding a 20% off sale, with its standard free shipping for orders of $50 or more. It’s the standard fare there – mostly Marvel Select and Marvel Minimates, but they also have some Sideshow Collectible items (including the black-suited Spider-Man from Emo 3) and Funko bobble-heads.

There’s a Deadpool bobble-head there that I’ve been thinking about getting for some time now. Excelsior!

Five Day 25% Off Sale at MarvelStore.com Starts Today

For the next five days, the MARVELPAL code is back in action at the Marvel Store, good for 25% off your order. In addition to the Marvel-themed clothes, accessories, and stuff to decorate your house, they’ve also got Marvel Select figures, Marvel Minimates, LEGO Marvel Super Hero sets, Funko Marvel bobble-heads, and more. If you hit $50 on your order, then you also get free shipping.

This is a great way to get the black-suited Hot Toys Spider-Man from Spider-Man 3. It’s listed for $209.99, same as what you’d pay for the black-suited Spidey at Sideshow Collectibles, but you get the 25% off and free shipping. It comes with a great Tobey Maquire alternate head and a very cool Sandman base.

The code expires on Monday, November 11. Excelsior!
