San Diego Comic-Con 2011 – Coverage Starts Today

AFP’s coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2011 will kick off today with reports from the floor on Preview Night. Sandman will be joining me at the show again this year, and I’m psyched that our own Buzzy Fret will be there too. And of course we’ll be hanging out with the crew from the Fwoosh, as well as other members of the online toy community.

You probably have noticed that in the past few weeks we haven’t been posting as much as usual. I had been getting some comments that AFP has been on the slow side as we’ve grown. I figured it would probably be best to do something about that before SDCC kicked off in high gear.

So for the past few weeks, I’ve been moving stuff over to our new host and getting the site working again – and that’s why it’s been a little slow here. But that’s about to be rectified… hopefully our new host will be able to keep us live as the show goes on. Please let me know how the site is holding up.

See you back here tonight, when we should be posting highlights from Preview Night!

San Diego Comic-Con 2011 – Hasbro Unveils Marvel Legends Heroic Age Thor and More Exclusives on Attack of the Show

Hasbro unveiled the San Diego Comic-Con Marvel Legends Heroic Age Thor exclusive on Attack of the Show last night, and it looks awesome. Verily! The Mjolnir packaging is clever, but I don’t think it will survive the trip back home. I wonder if the $24.99 price tag will deter folks from jumping back on the Marvel Legends bandwagon.

They also showed off the GI JOE / Transformers crossover exclusive with Cobra Commander and Skystriker, priced at $49.99. And then there’s the lost Indiana Jones exclusives, packaging up the last wave of figures (plus a few more) that never made it to retail. Hasbro has a lot more exclusives, but that AOTS airtime isn’t easy to get. We’ll have to cover those in person at SDCC.

San Diego Comic Con 2011 – Hasbro Exclusive Marvel Legends Thor to Debut on Attack of the Show

There was a small amount of concern that the recent press pics released by Hasbro for their San Diego Comic-Con exclusives did not include the Marvel Legends Heroic Age Thor they had revealed during their Marvel presentation at the Hasbro collector event at Toy Fair earlier this year. Apparently, the marketing folks at Hasbro held back Thor for an exclusive reveal on G4TV’s Attack of the Show – the episode will air tonight and we’ll have the video shortly thereafter.

One additional tidbit, that the AOTS folks probably won’t cover – Thor was sculpted by Paul Harding, who offers up a little background on the Paul Harding Studios blog. Click through to check out his work. Great stuff!

I think I sculpted this bad boy about 3 years ago. Finally it is seeing the light of day. Actually, I’m very happy to have this one released because it was extremely fun to make and it was during Coipel’s beautiful first run on Thor. Those of you going to San Diego this week check it out!

San Diego Comic Con 2011 – Hasbro Exclusive Marvel Press Pics

Hasbro devoured our worlds off with last year’s Marvel Universe Galactus exclusive, and they’re ready to destroy all mutants with their follow-on, the Sentinel. Joe Quesada again provides the artwork on the suitcase packaging. HasbroToyShop will have this (and all the SDCC exclusives) in limited quantities after the show, but I imagine these will be hard to come by. The Sentinel will also be available in a retail version with a variant deco, and it will come with a bonus Marvel Universe Wolverine. I prefer the SDCC deco.

The past two years we also got Mighty Muggs exclusives for Marvel, but Hasbro’s gone Mini on Muggs, with an Avengers set (including a Mighty-sized Giant Man) and Spider-Man with removable cloth mask.

San Diego Comic Con 2011 – Hasbro Exclusive GI Joe and Transformers Press Pics

Why share the Hasbro GI Joe and Transformers exclusives for SDCC in one post?

Because the arguably coolest exclusive from Hasbro this year features the crossover Transformers Skystriker with GI Joe’s (well, Cobra’s, actually) Cobra Commander.

This exclusive harkens back to the four issue limited series, G.I. Joe and the Transformers, from way back in 1987. It shares the same title logo, and is aptly numbered as Issue 5.

Also available at SDCC – Zarana from the Dreadnoks in two variations, as well as Optimus Prime in “Ultimate” and “Zero” incarnations.
