DC Universe Classics Wave 10, Part Uno – thefwoosh.com

No, we’re not doing an homage to DC’s Countdown.  Just as we put up the second part of AFi’s DC Universe Classics wave 10 archive, Fwoosh hits us with part one of their look at the Wal-Mart exclusive wave 10, with Beast Boy, Batman, Joker, and Man-Bat.  There’s so much to like here, and VeeBee has really turned it up a notch with a very in depth, picture heavy First Look at these figures.

I’m drawn in particular to the Joker, who, with his Joker Fish accessory, looks to have leaped off of the late, great Marshall Rogers’ drawing board.  There’s nothing I can even nitpick about on the figure, other than that I’ll miss the “BANG” gun that he had been previously shown with.

It happens every so often that you get one of those figures and after you open it and put it on your shelf and admire it for a tick, you can just say, “Wow, I don’t think I will ever need another figure of this character”, because it is executed so well. That has happened to me a few times with past DCUC figures but I have to say, there might be several new definitive figures coming out of series 10.

DC Universe Classics Wave 10, Part Deux – AFi

ActionFigureInsider completes their archive of the upcoming Wal-Mart exclusive wave of DC Universe Classics with the Joker, Man-Bat, Batman, and the Collect and Connect figure, Imperiex.

It’s a bummer that the Joker lost his “BANG!” gun, but Bats did pick up a Batarang on top of his Bat-Computer.  What’s the best name for it – Bat-top?  Bat-book?  You decide!

Many many many more pics in their Toy Archive.

Mez-Itz Comic Book Hellboy Variant

If you guys read my review of Mezco’s Comic Book Hellboy, you know what a kickass vinyl figure he is. Mezco has just announced a variant, featuring Hellboy in a black BPRD shirt.  Looks like this one also has a completely closed mouth instead of gritted teeth, and I’m starting to wonder if people will mix and match heads like they did when the first movie Hellboy figures with all the open and closed mouth variants came out.  We just need a variant open Right Hand of Doom to make the experience complete!

The original Comic Book Hellboy was available at San Diego Comic-Con and is backordered at Mezco Direct, but I haven’t found a listing for this guy yet. Will update when I do.

Mezco’s beloved Mez-Itz return in a larger six inch form. These newly resized creations are the hot new item in the world of designer vinyl for 2009. Based on the artwork of Mike Mignola, this limited edition Hellboy Mez-Itz captures the essence of the comic book Hellboy from his sawed-off horns to his posable tail. Standing six inches tall, with six points of articulation, this limited edition variant figures comes complete with Hellboy’s legendary gun, the Samaritan, and features the famous BPRD (Bureau Of Paranormal Research And Defense) logo on his shirt.

Superman / Batman: Public Enemies – thefwoosh.com

Looks like the Fwoosh is going to have a busy week. They’ve got a preview of the Superman / Batman: Public Enemies line that should be hitting next month in support of the upcoming animated feature of the same name.

Up until seeing these up close, I had assumed that these figures would share bucks with DC Universe Classics and have newly sculpted heads to match the style of the movie. While the latter is true, it looks like the male figures in the line, at least those pictured here, are sharing a single new base body. The lack of clothing folds by the hips is what gave it away for me.

We have a bunch of new Mattel DC stuff for your viewing pleasure coming this week, but up first is a first time treat – a look at four of the new Superman/Batman Public Enemies figures! These six-inch figures are based off of the designs from the upcoming DC Animated movie, but for some, you might be able to fudge them in with your DC Classics collection. Read on to see some pictures and read some thoughts on this new line that will be invading your nearest Target soon.

As revealed at last month’s San Diego Comic Con, this new line of figures is being done to support the latest DC animated movie, but more importantly to us toy collectors, they are being handled by the same all-star team behind DC Universe Classics – the Four Horsemen. That being said, you know you are going to get top of the line sculpts that use parts from the DCUC line. Oh, and they also borrow the DCUC figure stands, but this time they are cast in grey plastic and imprinted with the movie’s logo (one stand is included with each figure).

I haven’t seen a of lot the previews for SB:PE, but the animation style is Ed McGuinness-influenced, and that’s mostly in how the heads look.  The distinctive McG anatomy has been toned down for the mainstream viewers.  That’s also how I’d describe the style for the figure line.

If you are looking for a standalone line, this will work out fine.  If you’d rather incorporate this into your DCUC collection, I think that the headsculpts are a bit too different, stylistically.  However, any extras are another useful source for fodder, especially with the smooth bodies and relative lack of costume details.

Marvel Legends – Nemesis Wave

Marvel Legends Nemesis Wave - Nova, Tigra, Black Bolt, Nemesis (BAF), Daredevil, and Beast
Marvel Legends Nemesis Wave - Nova, Tigra, Black Bolt, Nemesis (BAF), Daredevil, and Beast

Before I get started, yes, I know that there’s no Punisher here.  Since the Marvel Legends Nemesis wave is a Wal-Mart exclusive, I had to rely on the kindness of others to get these figures.  It started wayyyyy back when this wave started hitting in Canada – I thought they’d be hitting the US with haste, and when they didn’t, it was too late to nab a set.  Some smart people did, and I was the beneficiary of the heavy packing of Punisher and Daredevil, and their variants – a friend passed along their extra Build-A-Figure pieces for Nemesis (nee Holocaust).

When this wave recently started hitting Wal-Marts in the US, I again relied on friends to fill out the wave.  But since I already had the BAF piece, and because I already had the perfect Punisher (a combination of Toy Biz’s ML 4 and Face-Off, by Joshua Izzo), I passed on him.  So, this pictorial is brought to you by kickass Fwooshers Simun, DisThunder, and ActorJez – thanks very much, guys!
