Dark Horse Direct Hellboy by 1000toys

Dark Horse Direct captured my attention at San Diego Comic-Con last year with its reveal of a comic-based, super-articulated Hellboy in the 6-inch scale from 1000toys. It had been over 12 years since Mezco had produced a much-loved series of comic book Hellboy figures. And with a movie reboot in the works, I easily overlooked the $120 price tag – the most I’ve ever spent on a figure in this scale.

Fast forward to the present. I’ve got the figure in hand. And while Dark Horse has teased a companion Abe Sapien, the movie starring David Harbour bombed, tarnishing the brand and making this Hellboy an expensive, potentially one-off figure. With that in mind, does it live up to the hype and expectations?

SDCC 2015: Mondo Sneak Peek at 1/6 Scale TMNT Leonardo and More

Posters, vinyl, and collectible figures will be available for Ant-Man, Superman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

SDCC 2015 Mondo TMNT, Ant-Man, and Hellboy

I’ll be making my first visit to Mondo at booth #835 this year. They first caught my attention with a PVCĀ figure of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, but at SDCC they’ll be introducing a 1/6 scale comics-based version of the turtles, starting with Leonardo. They’ve said they’ll have all four turtles on hand.

In addition, Mondo has a bunch of other artist-driven collectibles to show off, including a statue of the first Hellboy (from the Mignola sketch from 1991), a poster for Ant-Man, and two records for those of you who still spin vinyl – from Aliens and Superman: The Animated Series.

Marvel Select The Wolverine – Write Your Own Story by ActionFiguresRule

A few weeks ago, our good friend Richard, aka ActionFiguresRule, from the MATRIX Photo Booth and AFR Studio sent me some quick pics for the Marvel Select Wolverine from Diamond Select Toys. He promised some follow-up pictures in more of a story format. And he sent them a little while back, and in all my glorious laziness I only got them posted today (sorry Richard!)

The cool thing is that he’s provided all the pictures for a great story, but left it up to you to fill in the rest. Have a great plot, or dialogue, or the whole deal? Leave it in the comments below. Have fun!

Tri-State Collectors – Shop in the Mezco Vault – 8/16 Only!

[Update: Reading is fundamental! I posted this thinking the sale was today, but it’s next week. Oops!]

I often miss living in NYC (rarely during the oppressive summers or freezing cold winters, though), and today is one of those days. Starting in a short while at Noon EST On Friday next week, Mezco is opening up their vault and making some unique items available for sale to collectors like you and me.

So if you’re in the Tri-State area, now’s next Friday the time to tell your boss that you’ve come down with a summer cold, and get your butt to Mezco in Long Island City and pick up some loot. I’d be there if I could!

SDCC 2013: Sideshow Collectibles Instapics

Sideshow collage

SDCC is pretty busy, and I don’t often have enough time to just walk around and look at stuff. The Sideshow booth is one location where I definitely love to spend time just soaking it all in. I don’t usually take pictures of the larger items with my “real” camera – it’s somewhat torturous because there’s so much goodness there, and I would just be killing myself processing pictures of stuff that is way beyond my means to collect. (I did capture most of the Hot Toys displays at Sideshow in an earlier post.)

Still, I couldn’t resist snapping some shots with my phone camera. With no polarizing filter, it’s impossible to get a shot of the glass displays without getting some reflection of lights or other things in the shot. And I guess for these pictures, the glare and reflections are part of the fun.
