Hasbro Update on Marvel Legends 6-Inch “Fan’s Choice” News

Yesterday we posted an update from a member of TheFwoosh.com, who attended a Marvel action figure panel with Jesse Falcon (VP of Licensing at Marvel) at Wizard World Philadelphia.  The update described what representatives from Hasbro and Marvel presented about their future plans for Marvel Legends.  Today, I heard from the Hasbro Marvel brand team with some more details and clarification of what’s to come.  Here’s the brass tacks:

Hasbro will launch a “Fan’s Choice Pick 3” poll for Marvel Legends at San Diego Comic-Con:

  • They will be displaying between 16 to 18 never-produced figures at their booth in San Diego Comic-Con.  These will be mostly new figures, but some fans may have seen a couple of them before.
  • These figures will be options for the “Fan’s Choice Pick 3” poll.  The poll will kick off on the first day of Comic-Con, and the top 3 vote getters will make it into the next wave of two packs.  The next wave of two packs is slotted for 2010, with the exact timing still to be determined.
  • The Hasbro Marvel team will choose 3 other figures from the same 16 to 18 figures on display.  They will be paired up with the Fan’s Choice winners in that wave.
  • So, to summarize, the next wave of two packs will feature six characters – 3 chosen by fans, and 3 chosen by the Hasbro Marvel team.

One point of clarification – our report yesterday indicated that there would be no more retailer exclusive waves for Marvel Legends.  This was something that struck me as odd, since big box retailers wouldn’t normally have their 2010 plans until after Fall Toy Fair in October.  And, it turns out to be inaccurate:

Actually, when asked about exclusives (someone mentioned that they had a hard time finding some of them and that they would prefer that exclusives didn’t continue), Jesse underscored the fact that exclusives were an important part of the business and would certainly continue.

Expect updates as we hear more – official pics are coming soon.  I am still psyched to hear Marvel Legends plans, with the line currently on hiatus.

This year’s remaining Marvel Legends two packs, featuring Nick Fury, Hand Ninja, classic Iron Man, etc., are expected to retail shelves by mid to late August via Toys R Us and Diamond Comics.

Four Horsemen Gothitropolis Sneak Peek – FANtastic Exclusive Forum

Pardon me if I get a little misty here – this week has been pretty fantastic in the action figure world.  We started off the week announcing our Marvel Universe Comic Cover Contest that we’re running with TheFwoosh.com.  Mattycollector.com had MOTU Classics Hordak and the DC Universe Classics Battle for Earth 3 set on sale on Monday, and that fittingly kicked off an onslaught of Mattel and Four Horsemen announcements and reviews.  If that wasn’t enough, today we get early word on the Marvel Legends relaunch from Wizard World Philly.

But getting back to why I’m posting – seeing as how fantastic of a week it’s been, it’s somehow poetic that we close out the week with a teaser about the Four Horsemen’s Fantastic Exclusive.  Gothitropolis was originally supposed to be the property that would be offered this summer, but for various reasons the 4H decided to go with 7th Kingdom and Queen Alluxandra and variants instead.

After all those announcements, they decided to give a little taste of what the upcoming Egyptian-themed Gothitropolis variants will be like.

Thought you guys might want a sneak peek at things to come…

Marvel Legends Teaser Pics of Warpath, Madrox the Multiple Man, and Lady Bullseye – TheFwoosh.com

Update: El Diablo V2 provided some more context for the panel and images:

They had a panel titled “Hasbro Toys: Marvel” or something along those lines. Jesse and two Hasbro people were there, one from marketing and the other was a sculptor I think, not sure. They showed three presentations and then held a Q&A. The first presentation was really interesting…it showed the process of making an ML, including some cool shots of the stages of Galactus. He went through it really fast and I barely could get a picture. The second slide-show was on Toybiz and what we missed out on. That one hurt a bit…

The last one was just Jesse opening up three .jpgs of the Mls and talking about each one. People cheered for the first two, and everyone was underwhelmed by Lady Bullseye.

I do need to say this…not ONCE did they mention/plug Marvel Universe. This was strictly 6″ ML talk. It was great. Jesse hung around a bit afterwards and I spoke with him for a minute. He must have been remotely un-creeped out because he walked out with me and shook my hand a few times. I told him I was from the Fwoosh and I thanked him for all of the information, and apologized about the onslaught of negativity directed at him. He was a stand-up guy and seemed to be having fun during the event.

Marvel Legends is back, according to a Fwoosher who attended Wizard World Philly today! Fwoosher El Diablo V2 spoke with Jesse Falcon, who ran the Marvel Legends line when it was at Toy Biz and handles aspects of the licensing relationship Marvel now has with Hasbro.  Prior to New York Comic-Con earlier this year, Jesse said ‘I wanted to come on the Fwoosh and let you guys know that next weekend your [sic] going to see something I think is amazingly cool that will be happening with the 6″ Marvel Legends line,’ only to have to recant due to some miscommunication between Hasbro and Marvel.  I’m really psyched to see this finally come to fruition – maybe Jesse can start posting at the Fwoosh again. 😀

Please note: the turnarounds for Absorbing Man and Darkhawk, and the prototype of the Avengers Quinjet are from the Toy Biz days.  These were toys that were never released, not a teaser for upcoming toys from the Hasbro Marvel team.  These were previously shown as part of Action Figure Insider’s “Behind the Plastic” panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2008.

Allright guys, here’s my report.

  • They will be showing 16-18 prototypes at SDCC for release in 2010.
  • The 3 two-packs will be hitting in late August at the latest, still distributed by Diamond and TRU.
  • They hinted at a new Deadpool being revealed SDCC, as well as an Inhuman to accompany Blackbolt.
  • No BAFs are coming out next year.
  • They will be doing a fan poll for new ML, the top 3 will be split across 3 new two-packs, with Hasbro choosing the partners. These will most likely come out this time next year.
  • NO RETAIL EXCLUSIVES NEXT YEAR!!!
  • They’re still working out packaging, as in singles/two-packs for the other assortments. It seemed to me they’re leaning towards two-packs for now still.
  • They also had a segment on Toybiz stuff that never made it, and I have a few pics from that as well.

Pics of Masters of the Universe Classics Teela Painted Prototype – He-Man.org

Sword-of-Grayskull, a poster at He-Man.org, was on hand at Wizard World Philly and took some pictures of a painted prototype of the upcoming Masters of the Universe Classics Teela.  Unfortunately S-o-G had some camera issues, so there weren’t many clear shots of the “fixed”” booty.  Still, you’ve got to applaud the effort.

Both this and the unpainted proto at NY Comic-Con featured Teela in her snake headdress.  I am wondering if that is removable.  Anyone know?

On display today at Wizard World Philadelphia, booth #400 – the Four Horsemen’s booth – was Teela in all her painted beauty. If you look at her rear, you’ll notice there’s also something different from NYCC.

At the 4HM’s panel, I asked them if there was anything different about this prototype from the one at NYCC. Cornboy replied, “You mean did we fix her booty?” And he said the answer was yes, they did go back and change it. Eric Treadway added that it was because of the “pages and pages” of “unanimous” opinion. Later I stopped by their booth to grab pics, and Cornboy was kind enough to take Teela out of the case so that I could get some clearer visuals (the glass was screwing up the focus on my camera, hence why the last couple of pics are a little fuzzy). So without further ado, here’s my photos:

First Look – DCUC Fists of Clay and Giants of Justice Flash – TheFwoosh.com

The final first look at TheFwoosh.com this week is a double-shot of DC Universe. They take a look at the upcoming DC Universe Classics Fists of Clay 2-pack, featuring a muddied black and gray Batman (a repaint of DCUC wave 1) and Clayface (a re-release from the DC Superheroes line.) I was more interested in the Giants of Justice Flash, a continuation of Mattel’s 12-inch rotocast line that so far has included Batman, Superman, and Killer Croc.

I have not been collecting these due to price – at close to $30 it just seems too high, especially for a rotocast figure. But Flash looks pretty good. He’s going to be on sale at the Toys R Us booth at San Diego Comic-Con.

DC Universe Giants of Justice Flash

I like this figure for what it is. He is a scaled up version of the Four Horsemen’s DCUC sculpt (so it is kinda like getting one of their amazing prototypes) with some of the articulation of his smaller counterpart cut out. His points are as followed- ball head, partial ball shoulders, hinge elbows, waist swivel, cut t-hips and knee hinges. So, not as much articulation as we get in DCUC, but still quite a few point. He is, like the Giants figures before him, a hollow figure with fantastic paint applications, I cannot find one bit of bleed or slop.
