Webswipe: ThreeA Toys Teaser for the Invincible Iron Man, Marvel Series One Release One – Kadoo (3A Forum)

3A Iron Man WIP - via KadooKadoo from the 3A Forums has posted a teaser “from the Goodsmile Booth at Harikore” (not sure what company and show to which that refers) that reveals the first figure due from 3A Toys’ Marvel license. And with Iron Man 3 crushing the big screen this weekend, it’s fitting that the inaugural figure will be the Invincible Iron Man.

So – what do you think? Since this is not yet final and hasn’t been painted, I’ll just stick to my previous thoughts about the license and some general first impressions. When I had the chance to ask Ashley Wood about how he envisioned handling the Marvel license, at the top of my mind was the question of how stylized his re-imaginings of the Marvel characters would be. I think the Iron Man teaser answers that pretty clearly – when the finished product comes out, these figures will likely be more at home with other 3A lines rather than more traditional Marvel figure lines, like those from Hasbro such as the Marvel Legends Icons, or the Hot Toys Marvel movie figures.

With the uni-beam and distinctively shaped face plate on his helmet, this is unmistakeably Iron Man, but the lanky proportions and over-sized hands and feet, among other things, makes this a decidedly 3A figure. It is what I expected, but not quite what I was hoping for – the part of me that wants a mainstream comics-based Marvel line in 1/6 scale would have been ecstatic over a more literal interpretation, like 3A had done with its Star Wars prototypes and its upcoming Capcom Lost Planet figures.

But don’t take that as disappointment. Rather, this direction will just need a little shift in mindset – from action figure to art figure. From that vantage point, I think I’ll be better able to justify the triple digit cost, and better tolerate the long waits between art pieces.

The second wave of Iron Man Legends is now available on Amazon.com – it was a little hard to find, but aptly designated search for “Iron Monger build a figure” will bring up the three figures in IML2 needed to complete the Iron Monger build-a-figure. All three figures are available directly from Amazon for $16.99 and are eligible for Prime shipping.

Update: The much-maligned Ultron is no longer available directly from Amazon, but you can still pick him up for a few bucks more sold out.

Hot Toys Announces Third Iron Man Diecast – the War Machine Mark II

Hot Toys War Machine Mark II Diecast 1

I guess we’re going to continue to see a lot of Iron Man news this week. Here’s the third armor to hit the new Diecast line from Hot Toys – the Mark II War Machine. The Mark II feels a lot sleeker than the original War Machine (pictured here with the Hot Toys Iron Monger), but in diecast form will only come with a few sets of hands as accessories – although Hot Toys continues to promote interchangeable parts with the MMS and Power Pose lines. To offset the notion that diecast won’t be as poseable as the traditional MMS figures, Hot Toys has included some pictures showing some of the poses possible – pretty impressive.

Hot Toys also showed off a smaller holographic War Machine slug which will have some exclusivity based on geography – they also did one for the Avengers Iron Man Mark VII, and that one was limited to the Sideshow exclusive version of the Mark VII (waiting list only now).

Hot Toys Iron Man Mark VII Disassembled

Hot Toys Iron Man Mark VII Disassembled

Ever wondered how many parts are required to make a Hot Toys Iron Man figure? This is an extremely cool picture of an Avengers Iron Man Mark VII figure in its pre-assembled state, with its more than 300 individual parts. One piece that’s missing though is the head sculpt of RDJ – I guess a disembodied head might be a bit macabre.

Don’t worry – if you get this figure (you can still pre-order the Iron Man Mark VII from Sideshow with expected delivery in May) you won’t have to build it yourself, although I’m sure there are some model builders out there who would relish the challenge. This exploded view of the figure is just a display piece at the Iron Man 3 Hot Toys Collectible Figurines Exhibit at Action City in Singapore. If you happen to be close by, the exhibit is open through May 5th.
