Playmates – Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Tremendous Play Value!

This fall, Nickelodeon debuted Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the fourth animated TMNT show. Earlier this month, Playmates Toys launched the accompanying toy line. Our friends at Playmates were kind enough to send us five figures from the new action figure assortment – the four Turtles, because no review could be complete without them, and Baron Draxum, the main baddie from the new show.

Lions and Rabbit and Lizard, Oh My! – Playmates Reveals Voltron and TMNT Exclusives for SDCC

Playmates has revealed San Diego Comic-Con exclusives for two of its fan-favorite franchises. First, a diecast set of lions that form an 8-inch Voltron from Dreamworks’ acclaimed Voltron: Legendary Defender. You can get the lions individually, but we all know you will get all five. No word on price yet, but to give you an idea, ToysRUs has a 16-inch Voltron set available now for $99.99 – but in this set the lions are plastic, not diecast.

They will also have an exclusive version of Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo, perhaps best known for his cross-over with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and animated series. For $30 and limited to only 350 to be sold at SDCC, the rabbit ronin will come with 3 interchangeable heads, 2 comics, and even his pet lizard, Spot. As Spot would say, EEP!

SDCC 2015: Mondo 1/6 Scale TMNT May Just Be Best in Show this Year

SDCC 2015 - Mondo One Sixth Scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1 of 20)

I didn’t know much about Mondo for long before Comic-Con – their foray into figures had been limited to a much-favored Iron Giant figure, but it’s been mired in production complications and delayed. I think their upcoming foray into 1/6 scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will shine an even bigger spotlight on them. From this first look at the prototypes, I think they’ve nailed the designs and how to put together a compelling package – and the more simplified (and reusable) sculpts, compared to the Iron Giant, will make the TMNT line a much smoother production.

In addition, they’ll be hosting a TMNT panel on Friday, July 10. We’ll try to be there!

SDCC 2015: Playmates Revives Metal Mutants after 20 Years with TMNT Leonardo Exclusive

Playmates TMNT Metal Mutants Leonardo - 2015 and 1995

Playmates has revealed its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exclusive for San Diego Comic-Con – an 11-inch vac-metal plated Metal Mutants Leonardo. Long-time TMNT fans may recognize the Metal Mutants from 1995, when Playmates released the four turtles and Shredder under that moniker. Playmates gave some hints as to why Leo is bedecked in metal this time around, saying, “There was a previous Metal Mutants line, but that was more about animal spirit armor, not exploring Dimension X.”

No word yet on the price of the exclusive. I imagine we’ll see more Metal Mutants from Playmates at the big show, but wonder if there will be more in the 11-inch size or if Leo will be a one-off.
