Toy Fair 2014: More Pics of the Masters of the Universe Classics Rio Blast

Mattel shared some additional pics of the Masters of the Universe Classics Rio Blast on the Mattycollector Facebook page. Rio Blast was revealed at Toy Fair as the September Club Eternia figure at their collector preview event. It’s almost a shame to cover up that head sculpt with all that gear, which is absolutely ridiculous in a fun, over-the-top MOTU way – Rio Blast has one of the more striking head sculpts for a Masters figure in recent memory, hearkening back to Fisto.

I hope that the design team will revert to the older style chest overlays, which don’t bloat the figures as they did with Sea Hawk. The chest piece looks great here on the prototype, but we’ll have to see how it looks in production.

Toy Fair 2014: Finally, a Breaking Bad Jesse Pinkman from Mezco

There’s lots of characters I’d like to see in a Breaking Bad action figure line, but at the heart of the show, it was Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Mezco has made a few figures of Walt / Heisenberg, but it wasn’t until this Toy Fair that they revealed Pinkman in action figure format (they’ve had him in their bobble-head and plush line-ups previously).

While I think they pretty much nailed it on Walt, the Jesse Pinkman head sculpt is a bit off, particularly under the harsh lights of a camera flash; I think it could use some more tweaking. Meanwhile, Mezco is going to leverage the crap out of that Walter White lab suit sculpt, releasing it in every possible color variant from the show. They’ll also be making 12-inch figures of the duo in their lab suits – although I wonder if it’s just terminology for the license, because the 6-inch figures of Walt have no articulation. Are those shoulder swivels on Pinkman?

Toy Fair 2014: Playmates Adds 1990 Movie Turtles to TMNT Classics Line-Up

Go ninja! Go ninja, go! Playmates has added Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo from the 1990 live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie to their TMNT Classics line. Although this was not confirmed by Playmates representatives at Toy Fair, I’m giving kudos to Playmates for what is sizing up to be a big public service. Older fans like you and me will be able to take comfort with these figures, as Michael Bay proceeds to destroy another childhood memory this summer. 😉

While I generally like what they’ve done with these figures, I think with the individualized head sculpts they could have gone a little further, with Raphael in particular. The belts ride high, and some freckles would really cement the paint apps. With the new movie coming out this summer, I get why Playmates would release these – but we really need some Classics Foot Ninjas and Shredder.

Hot Toys is Back with the Battle-Damaged T-800 from The Terminator

Hot Toys Terminator T-800 (Battle-Damaged) 01

When Ahhnold uttered “I’ll be back” in the 1984 classic Terminator, you could tell it was destined to be his catchphrase for almost every movie he’s been in since – but I bet you never saw it coming that 30 years later, he’d be back as an action figure that you could use to recreate that scene, and most of the carnage that follows. Well, maybe you did.

I’ve lost count on how many different versions Hot Toys has released of Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, but I think it’s at least equal to the number of times he’s appeared as the Terminator on the big screen. This is at least the second from the original movie – the earlier Hot Toys T-800 has him in his disco garb from the start of the movie. If you’re only going to have one of them, I think this is the more definitive version, establishing the leather jacket and sunglasses as mainstays for the rest of the films.

You can pre-order the Hot Toys Terminator T-800 battle damaged version from Sideshow Collectibles for $229. Continue reading “Hot Toys is Back with the Battle-Damaged T-800 from The Terminator”

Toy Fair 2014: Funko Announces Magic: The Gathering Figure Lines

Funko Magic the Gathering Planeswalker Legacy Action Figures

It looks like Funko is determined to move into the super-articulated action figure space. They recently announced Legacy figures for Game of Thrones, and they’re adding a second fantasy license with Magic: The Gathering Planeswalker. Like the Game of Thrones line, these have also been sculpted by Gentle Giant.

Sandman had asked Hasbro about the license back at SDCC (where they had produced an exclusive card set) – they indicated at the time that they thought the market wasn’t quite big enough for figures. I suppose Funko doesn’t mind going after smaller licenses that don’t have the broad appeal required by a big company like Hasbro.

The Legacy figures will hit shelves in August. Funko will also be producing Magic figures in their popular Pop! Vinyl line, due in April.
