Playmates Bringing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Action Figure Showcase and Exclusive Shredder to San Diego Comic-Con

If you’re a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you’ll like what Playmates has planned for San Diego Comic-Con this year. First, folks from the Playmates TMNT team will be hosting a panel at SDCC to cover the plans for the toy line. They’ll have folks on hand that have worked on the line from the very beginning, through three incarnations of animated turtles.

They’ll also have an exclusive vac metal Shredder available for collectors. Cowabunga, dudes!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Action Figure Showcase

Playmates Toys, the master toy licensee for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is hosting a panel during Comic-Con.  We’ve included additional details for you below, and we’d love to see you there!

  • When: Thursday, July 18th 2PM-3PM
  • Where: Comic-Con International: San Diego, Room 25ABC
  • What:  Hear what’s now, new and next for our favorite action figures! The panel will offer sneak peeks at future toys and attendees can ask questions of ‘team green’ members who’ve worked on all three incarnations of the Turtles since their debut decades ago.

Exclusive Shredder Action Figure

Playmates Toys and Nickelodeon will also be debuting a special Comic-Con edition Shredder action figure, which will be on sale in Nickelodeon’s booth – # 4113.  Standing at a height of 5.75 inches tall, the 2013 Comic Con Edition Shredder is ready for battle. Protected by his vacuum metallized razor-sharp armor and helmet, Shredder stands on his customized sewer lid base looking for revenge. Packed in his one of a kind, four color closed box, this figure is highly collectible with only limited quantities available.

Play Imaginative to Release Jim Lee Super Alloy Superman Exclusive Edition at SDCC

Play Imaginative New 52 Superman Exclusive Edition

Play Imaginative has whipped up an Exclusive Edition of its Super Alloy New 52 Superman that will be available at San Diego Comic-Con. It joins the Super Alloy New 52 Batman that is being re-released for SDCC after an initial release at the Singapore Toy, Games, and Comic Convention last year.

No word if this version of Superman will be any different than the Super Alloy Superman planned for general release – if it’s the same, it should feature a second head with heat vision eyes and a crystal fortress base that houses a fan to give the fabric cape the windblown look. Superman will be priced at $360, and we’ve heard Batman will go for $300. Both figures will be available at the Yes Anime booth #4729.

NECA Packages Exclusive Kick-Ass 2 Action Figures for San Diego Comic-Con

NECA Kick-Ass 2 SDCC Exclusives

If you want the jump on Kick-Ass 2 action figures ahead of their planned release with the movie in August, then you’ll have to get your ass (or someone else’s) to San Diego Comic-Con, where the first of NECA’s line of Kick-Ass 2 figures will be available. And as a bonus, the SDCC versions will come with special packaging more aligned with the film’s R rating – they’ll be devoid of any censoring. To make the general release more retail friendly, any mentions of Kick-Ass and the Mother Fucker will appear on the regular packaging as KA and MFer.

It’s difficult to tell with the others, but I’m glad to see that Kick-Ass has got a lot more articulation than the one that NECA made for the first movie. That one was closer to a statue, while this one has Mattel hips, articulation in the torso, and elbros. That’s a big step up.

DC Collectibles Reveals New 52 Lex Luthor in Time-Lapse Digital Sculpting Video

DC Collectibles New 52 Lex Luthor Digital Sculpt ACTION COMICS #23.3 LEX LUTHOR

Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor will be joining the DC Collectibles line of New 52 action figures, as revealed in a video blog of their digital sculpting approach. I’m a fan of Lex’s armored look, but I haven’t really been following a lot of DC Comics since the New 52 re-launch – so I’m not really sure if there’s been a definitive armored look for him.

Digital sculpting has likely reduced the cycle times and cost of action figure design, but probably not to the point where we can see figures hit shelves concurrent with the latest comic book looks. They’ve gotten a lot closer though, as evidenced by the New 52 line.

Will the Masters of the Universe Classics Icer Get a Cool Reception?

After Mattel revealed that Clamp Champ will not have any figures left over for “day of” sales, many cherry-pickers (and some Club Eternia subscribers, too) decried Mattel’s perceived continued push to get collectors to subscribe or miss out. Now that they’ve revealed packaged pics of Icer, the first in the six figure Filmation subscription, will they get more flack? Icer will have some figures available for day of sales. The main difference? Clamp Champ was one of the original figures in the vintage Masters of the Universe line, while Icer was not.

I think there’s little point to try to read anything into production levels for the first couple of Filmation figures. They sold the subs in February, so at least for Icer they probably had to make an educated guess on how many figures to make. But as they can factor in the number of Club Filmation subscribers, I believe they will reduce the number of extras. Mattel has shown that they don’t want to risk carrying extra inventory – so let’s see if we have day of sales inventory for the rest of the Filmation line.

The Filmation subscription has begun! Icer, our premier figure in the 6 month 2013 Club Filmation subscription has begun! Icer ships in July to all Club Filmation sub holders with additional small quantities available for day of sales. Note Icer does not ship to Club Eternia members. Club Filmation was a separate purchase back in Feb. with one new Filmation character each month (from either the classic He-Man and Princess of Power animated shows!) July through December 2013.
