Soapbox Sunday: Latest Mattycollector Sale Shows Shortcomings; How to Turn it Around

Mattycollector Shortcomings

Remember the good (or bad, depending how you fared) old days when there were toys that you actually wanted to buy on Mattycollector on their monthly sales dates? Those toys would sell out in hours, sometimes minutes. And while that truly meant missed opportunities through lost sales, the quick sell-outs became the barometer for successful products.

Fast forward to today. We’re a couple of days past the Mattycollector sale for October, and looking at the sale page, there’s not a single item on the page that’s sold out. There’s not even a single item that’s marked with the “Almost Gone” tag that Mattel would add to give you a sense of urgency to grab up those soon to be sold out toys. And for a company whose marketing team is so fond of saying “We’ll keep making them as long as you keep buying them,” I’ve got to wonder how much longer Mattel will keep making them, because we certainly not buying them – at least not like we used to.

I AM GROOT! (Translation: Marvel Legends Rocket Raccoon and Nova Back in Stock at Amazon)

While we just happen to be on the subject of dancing trees, it’s come to our attention that the Marvel Legends Rocket Raccoon and Nova figures are back in stock at Amazon for their regular price of $21.99 each. If you recall, it was Nova that proved to be the top seller of the Guardians of the Galaxy series, despite not even being a part of the movie. And since all the members of this Marvel Legends wave are needed to complete the Build-A-Figure Groot… well, let’s just say that we weren’t sure he was gonna grow back this time.

This leaves me in a bit of a quandary. As you know, I’m a huge fan of both Marvel Legends and GotG. When the ML Nova and Rocket were Knowhere to be found, I hopped on the Hot Toys bandwagon. Now that the Legends are back and their pals are on sale… what to do? (Answer: buy them, of course!)

For those of you counting, buying these figures individually now comes out much cheaper than buying the set of six for the regular price of $159.99. Come and get your love!

Weekend Toy Run: Transformers Age of Extinction First Edition Optimus Prime on Amazon

TRANSFORMERS FIRST EDITION OPTIMUS PRIME Open Package

The next installment in the Transformers movie franchise, Age of Extinction, isn’t due to hit theaters until late in June. The normal shelf date for movie toys is usually 3 months in advance of the opening. However, since the movie got a teaser spot in the Big (maybe not so fitting a descriptor this year) Game, Hasbro has jumped on board with something novel. Teaming up with Amazon, they launched the Transformers HQ on Amazon immediately following the airing of the teaser, and are offering up the first edition Transformers: Age of Extinction Optimus Prime.

That’s two Transformers exclusives with two different retailers launched on 2/2 – the first we covered was the Year of the Horse Starscream that’s exclusive to TRU. I checked the Toys R Us website for Starscream – the exclusive isn’t available online yet, but you might want to keep checking.
