Customizing Tips From The Buzzy Cave: Masters of the Universe Classics Hand Mod

Passing on some tips, tricks or minutiae for action figure customizing.

MOTUC Hand Mod 001

Howdy from the dark, dank Buzzy Cave!

When I first saw the news about the Masters of the Universe Classics line from Mattel the first thing I thought was, “Cool! Barbarian figures to make custom barbarians with!” Then a couple things put me off the idea – the biggest reason being the tiny hands. I can’t stand the way they look. I understand that Mattel and the Four Horsemen are incorporating a lot of the aesthetic from the original He-Man/MOTU line in MOTUC and the small hands are part of that package, but the little hands on the end of those huge arms really bugged me. But recently I’ve seen some very cool customs made with MOTUC bases and I’ve been inspired to try using them for a couple projects, which leads us here: how to fix those hideous, tiny hands!

Mattel Reveals Exclusive Chase Variant for Ghostbusters Retro Action Peter Venkman

I guess the San Diego Comic-Con experience wouldn’t be complete without a chase variant from Mattel. In the past couple of years, there was the clear DC Super Heroes Man-Bat, the bronze Masters of the Universe Classics King Grayskull, and the Toy Story “Andy” stamped Buzz Lightyear, among others.

This year it’s the green-skinned Ghostbusters Retro Action Peter Venkman, from the first season episode “Citizen Ghost” – it will be randomly-packed and available only at SDCC. This begs the question if Mattel will ever make variants for the other three Ghostbusters.

SDCC REVEAL! Ghostbusters Retro Action Peter Venkman

Retro Action is coming to the Ghostbusters with this “Citizen Ghost” Peter figure from the animated series “The Real Ghostbusters”! Peter talks with 3 phrases right from the show. Also includes proton pack and wand. Special variant for SDCC is an all Ecto Slime version of Peter with clear green skin. This variant is randomly packed and available only at the show! While supplies last.

I’m definitely a cherry-picker when it comes to the Masters of the Universe Classics line. My collection, up until recently, consisted only of both versions of King Grayskull (snagged at SDCC) and Battle Cat (thanks to superdoug, a very good friend and MOTUC collector). But when I saw the reveal of Optikk, I thought he looked like something straight off a Silver Age Justice League of America comic cover and immediately wanted 2 of them to menace my growing DCUC JLA.

Mattel San Diego Comic-Con Updates – Starro Packaging and Pre-Sale Vouchers

Two pretty awesome updates from Mattel on the MattyCollector site today. First up, a demo of the packaging for the JLA Presents Starro the Conqueror exclusive. I had heard that Kevin Conroy was providing the voiceovers here, but I didn’t realize that there was going to be so much of it.

And second, for those of you attending San Diego Comic-Con, maybe the lines for exclusives won’t be quite so bad this year. Mattel is offering pre-sales via MattyCollector on Tuesday, July 13, with pickup times next door to the San Diego Convention Center on Thursday – Saturday.

Toyfare 157 to Reveal New Hasbro Marvel Universe and Mattel DCUC, Ghostbusters, and MOTUC Figures

Toyfare 157 leads into San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s due to hit news stands next week. It will feature new figures from Hasbro and Mattel, and thanks to a subscriber who got his issue early, we’ve got the rundown for you.

Hasbro Marvel Universe

The fifth and sixth series of Marvel Universe for 2010 have been revealed by online retailers who posted pre-orders, but you’ll get some nice closeup pics of some of them in Toyfare. In series 5, you’ve got a Team X Wolverine who looks like a revisit to the 90’s Toy Biz Spy Wolverine, a classic Mystique, and Madrox the Multiple Man. Madrox is sporting his duds from the Ultimate Universe, but without his trenchcoat.

From series 6, there’s Hawkeye (Bullseye, spoiler!) from the Dark Avengers, a classic Constrictor, and Thanos. It looks like Thanos is not wearing the Infinity Gauntlet.
