Weinstein Co. Asks NECA to Discontinue Django Unchained Action Figures

I had read about the controversy over Django action figures on Kastor’s Korner but couldn’t believe it when my wife pointed out this news blurb on the Huffington Post. I think this is just posturing by the Weinsteins – by now I imagine production and distribution of the figures is done, and I can’t see a recall of product at retail over this.

I saw the movie – I don’t think it trivialized slavery. I don’t think the action figures trivialize slavery either. They’re movie collectibles. Looking at those head sculpts, I’d probably buy them, if Mego was my thing. But if owning action figures of black characters is insensitive, I better throw out (sorry, emancipate) my Black Panther, Black Lightning, and Black Goliath figures. What somebody really ought to figure out is why these guys all had to have “Black” in their character names.

‘Django Unchained’ Action Figures Discontinued

LOS ANGELES — The Weinstein Co. has asked a toy maker to discontinue a line of “Django Unchained” action figures after receiving complaints that they were offensive.

The studio said Friday that such collectibles have been created for all of director Quentin Tarantino’s films, including “Inglourious Basterds,” and that they were meant for people 17 and older, the audience for the film.

“Django Unchained” is a violent mix of spaghetti Western and blaxploitation genres about a freed slave (Jamie Foxx) who becomes a bounty hunter. Civil rights groups argued that the toys trivialized the horrors of slavery.

“We have tremendous respect for the audience and it was never our intent to offend anyone,” The Weinstein Co. said in a statement. Toy maker NECA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

To close out the week, here’s the two Marvel Legends 2013 wave 1 figures that are introducing new body types to the line – Hyperion and Red She-Hulk. Hasbro Marvel Legends 2013 Wave 1 Wolverine and Archangel

Marvel Legends 2013 - Wolverine and Archangel

I figured after posting the group shot and packaged pics of HML 2013 wave 1, I would ease us in with the two figures that are purely re-decos – Wolverine and Archangel, who were both in Hasbro’s SDCC exclusive Uncanny X-Force 3-pack last summer. I’ll admit that when I first saw at San Diego that Hasbro would be reissuing these figures in just a few month’s time, I had flashbacks to the SDCC 2011 exclusive Marvel Legends Thor and his subsequent re-release in the first wave of (Return of) Marvel Legends. With Thor, at first I was disappointed with the announcement but was ultimately pleased with the retail re-release – and with these two X-Men, I went through the same.

Steve Jobs 1/6 Action Figure Available for Pre-Order from legendstoys.jp

Steve Jobs from legendstoys.jp 1

When the 3A Toys AP-PEL Caesar was released, I was amazed that a businessman had become enough of a cultural icon to warrant an action figure – even if it was a tablet-toting robot. This 12-inch action figure of Steve Jobs from legendstoys.jp turns it up a notch or two, with its lifelike head sculpt, signature clothing from mock turtleneck down to the New Balance kicks, and sofa and apple accessories.

If you followed this series of posts from the toyhaven blog, it looks like this is an attempt to sell a Steve Jobs figure originally marketed by in icons that was ultimately stopped just yesterday, after pressure from Apple and Steve Jobs’ family. The repackaged figure lists at $199 (with shipping included), double the $99 price that in icons had for it, and swaps out the Apple products (iPhone and iPad) for a 1/6 scaled apple – likely an attempt to stave off more legal hassles from Apple.
