SDCC 2015: ThreeA Toys Expands Presence at Comic-Con

SDCC 2015 3A Toys - Exclusives

In past San Diego Comic-Cons, 3A Toys has shared booth space with IDW. With the clamor for their exclusives, this has led to some funny situations. At the top of the list was the year the 3A line for exclusives wrapped around the entire IDW booth, effectively blocking out a George R.R. Martin signing for IDW. This was before his fame extended into the mainstream with the HBO Game of Thrones show, so some of the guys in line were asking stuff like, “Who is that Old Man Gimli cosplayer and why is he shaking his Sharpie at us?”

That’s changed this year, with IDW helping 3A to secure nearby booth #2743 so they could have their own dedicated space. And 3A has upped their game by planning more exclusives available at the show.

One of the benefits of having his own company is that Ashley Wood gets to make what he likes. It’s great fun to see what he comes with, but as his tastes have veered to more eclectic selections like the Isobelle Pascha hyper-sexualized line or forays into new scales like the 3AGO / MEGO tribute 8-inch scale, my own tendency to purchase is down. Another case in point, for the 2000 AD line, now firmly ensconced in 1/12 scale, his choices for exclusives are the Gronk from Strontium Dog, and Judge Fish from Judge Dredd.

Personally, I’d have liked to see some of the bigger hitters from 2000 AD get made, as the line has had many fits and starts. I don’t think Gronk and Judge Fish will register with most Con-goers these days. Then again, Wood has never been concerned with mass market appeal for his toys.

Watch Robot Chicken – Giving Bats a Ride

Robot Chicken - Giving Bats a Ride

Need a laugh today? Watch Batman ask Green Lantern to “Pimp My Ride” as the Mego Justice League fights the DC Universe Classics Chemo, in this classic clip from Robot Chicken.

Now admit that this could be a better Justice League than Zack Snyder can pull together for the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie. 😀

ThreeA Toys Helloween to Feature Doctor Doom and More

3A Toys will be holding a Halloween sale again this year at Bambaland, and they’ll have a few treats for your goodie bags. First, they’re continuing the tradition of having a pumpkin-headed zombie available – this one will be a Charkin (the burnt variety compared to the yet to be in flames Zombkin) in the new 8-inch 3AGO / MEGO style. They will also introduce a new 1/6 line, called HEX,from new 3A designer Crystal Jade Vaughan.

Doctor Doom will also be available – three colorways have been revealed so far. Doom on Halloween? I guess the sorcery angle could explain it. Iron Man was pre-sold around Valentine’s Day – and you know, he’s got the bad heart. Holiday theme or just coincidence?

Soapbox Sunday: Breaking Bad – When a Mom Protests Your Action Figures (Almost) Everybody Wins

Last week, a Florida mom petitioned Toys R Us to stop selling Breaking Bad action figures, using the tried and true family values argument. Nearly ten thousand people voiced their support, and then Toys R Us blinked. This helped fill out an otherwise uneventful news day (if you discount the news of Ebola landing on US soil) with a story that resonated widely by bringing together pop culture and human interest angles. The story was picked up by everyone from ABC News to Zimbio.

Mainstream media came out largely in support of the Florida mom and the actions taken by Toys R Us, and this prompted fans of the TV show and action figures to protest the protest. Action Figure Insider’s Daniel Pickett launched a counter-petition, keeping the story in the news cycle for another revolution. The petition to keep Breaking Bad on toy shelves has garnered over forty thousand signatures, but despite this, TRU has not reversed its actions. This leads me to today’s topic: who actually won this fight?

You might be surprised (if you already forgot the title of this article) – almost everyone comes out ahead.

ThreeA Toys Channels MEGO with New 3AGO Figures

ThreeA Toys has got an army of MEGO-inspired humanoids available for pre-order at Bambaland. For fans who missed out on earlier 1/6 and 1/12 scale releases, 3AGO has included some of the mainstays from the World War Robot and Tomorrow King universes in a new 8-inch format. The MEGO proportions really complement these figures, and at $45 a pop, they’re priced like their smaller 1/12 scale counterparts.
