Spy Monkey Creations Kicks Off Teaser Campaign for Weaponeers of Monkaa

One of the best things about SDCC is running into old friends. Sandman and I were taking in the sights at ActionFigureXpress and the Four Horsemen’s booth when we bumped into Brian Stevenson, one of the three guys behind Spy Monkey Creations. We’re big fans of the Spy Monkey weapons and accessories they’ve made that are compatible with Masters of the Universe Classics and other toy lines (see our reviews of the Shields of Destruction and Deliverance, the Sword of Ages, and the Venom and Doppelganger accessory packs), so we asked Brian what was coming up next.

We spent the next half hour deep in conversation about the Weaponeers of Monkaa, which will be Spy Monkey’s first foray outside of accessories and into action figures. They officially launched the teaser campaign today with the first installment of the Weaponeers storyline – Chapter 1 of the Stranger’s Tale, The Old Miner. The backstory of the Weaponeers will be told in installments, a chapter every day or so, culminating in the launch of the line at PowerCon later this month.

What can you expect from this line? I’ll try not to spoil it, but there will be weapons (of course), an epic struggle between good and evil, and a new toy universe that will complement and expand the universes you may already be collecting. Stay tuned!

Play Imaginative Super Alloy Iron Man Spec Sheets

Update 9/6: Play Imaginative contacted me and requested that we remove the spec sheets – they are still developing the product and understandably do not want to have incorrect info in circulation, as that would impact their customers and licensors. Thanks for understanding!

At the Singapore Toy, Game, and Comic Convention, Play Imaginative announced that they would be making the Iron Man Mark VII armor in their Super Alloy line, which is 1/6 scale, super articulated, and made out of a lot of die cast pieces. Searching for more information, I found what look like spec sheets on the Toysdaily forum. I don’t think anyone would dispute that Hot Toys dominates 1/6 scale Iron Man, but I’m really curious to see what Play Imaginative will do.

The spec sheets certainly look promising – 50 points of articulation (including individually articulated fingers), LED lights in the helmet, ARC reactor, and hands, and a Hall of Armor lighted magnetic base. I hope this will live up to expectations – I love Hot Toys, but having an alternative will generate the kind of competition that will make the products better.

Hot Toys Reveals The Dark Knight Rises: Selina Kyle / Catwoman

Sadly, my wish for Selina Kyle in an alternate French maid’s costume has not come to pass, but that won’t stop me from jumping on this upcoming Hot Toys release, rooted hair and all. She’s somewhat low on the accessories (no, she doesn’t come with the Tumbler!) but hopefully that will give my wallet a break from all the Hot Toys suffering it’s endured recently. I am not sure if I recall this correctly, but I thought she was to come with a gun that would attach to the Tumbler – but no sign of that in the pics or the write-up from Hot Toys.

Not yet showing up in a search for Catoman Selina Kyle at Sideshow Toys, but I expect her to be added shortly.

Diamond Select Toys Announces Star Trek Select – Mr. Spock Beams Down Early 2013

I absolutely love my Art Asylum Star Trek figures, so I am glad to see Diamond Select Toys bringing Trek back to stores next year. DST borrows part of its playbook for its successful Marvel Select line – it will have Select-style packaging and diorama pieces, and will be available in comic book shops and online retailers. However, in place of some points of articulation, they’ve opted for interchangeable body parts. The first figure, Mr. Spock, will come with alternate head, hands, and a swap-outs for standing and crouching legs.

Although James T. Kirk is the next Select figure in line, with their claim to bring us characters from across the Trek universe, I suspect DST will look beyond the original series for character selection. We’ll see if they can work their way up to Marvel Select’s frequency of one figure a month. I just hope they eventually get to Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Janice Rand.
