Mattel kicked off their series of panels this Comic-Con with Toys 101  – a great layman’s conversation about the toy-making process.

Unfortunately during this panel, there was a particularly persistent SDCC volunteer who kept telling me to not photograph the video screen. Hence the back and forth panning of the camera.

SDCC 2013: Playmates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Panel Video

I haven’t yet been to the Playmates booth to take in the latest Turtles, but this panel served a dual purpose – one, of course, was to highlight upcoming product. The other was to do a bit of a retrospective of the last 30 odd years, with members of the Playmates team that had worked on the lines for most of that time.

SDCC 2013: Tamashii Nations, Bluefin, and Bandai

Continuing our 2013 SDCC coverage, here’s some more pics from the Tamashii Nations/Bluefin booth!

Love the Dragon Ball Z stuff and I almost missed the articulated Shenron teaser they had with the DBZ Figuarts Zeros! Pardon the lack of presentation here as I’m just tossing all the pics on here – it’s been a tiring day!

SDCC 2013: Mattel DC Universe

Mattel DC Universe (17 of 27)

I should reserve judgment until after the various Mattel panels (including Mattypalooza and the DC partnership ones), but my initial impression is that it will be another thin year for collector-oriented DC product. The exception, of course, is the Batman classic TV series line – but I can’t see that being a line with strong longevity.
