SDCC 2015 (and WebSwipe): Mattel Batman v Superman Exclusives – USA Today

SDCC 2015 Mattel Batman vs Superman 2-pack and Wonder Woman Barbie

Back when Mattel announced their Mattycollector exclusives for SDCC, many of us were surprised that they didn’t have any DC-related exclusives to show us. Surely, with Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice being promoted heavily, they wouldn’t miss out on that. Surely not. USA Today had the exclusive reveal today of Mattel’s BvS offerings for Comic-Con and beyond. For sale at the show, they’ll have a 2-pack of Batman vs Superman (natch!) in 6-inch scale and a Hot Wheels Batmobile, both from the upcoming movie. At $30, the 2-pack is well-priced for two 6-inchers, but I wonder if it’s indicative of what we’ll see for DC products from Mattel after the Four Horsemen era.

And for display, they’ll have a Wonder Woman Barbie based on Gal Gadot’s character from BvS, and a life-sized Hot Wheels Twin Mill car with graphics inspired from the movie. The Barbie and diecast toy version of the BvS Twin Mill will be available next spring as part of two new BvS product lines. I’ll admit, I do wonder what the Barbie versions of Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck will look like.

Border Patrol: Masters of the Universe Classics 200X Merman, Rio Blast, and Mosquitor

Border Patrol Masters of the Universe Classics 200X Merman Rio Blast and Mosquitor

It’s hard to make sense of how Mattel marketed Masters of the Universe Classics with respect to its earlier 200X toys. At first, they catered to 200X fans by including alternate, 200X-inspired heads. Then, they “banned” them, citing both cost concerns and upper management’s dislike of the aesthetics. And finally, with the line nearing its end, they decided to milk 200X by offering the 6-figure 200X sub. Along the way, there’s been missed opportunities, and it’s been up to customizers to fill those gaps.

In AFP’s Border Patrol, we scour active eBay auctions for customized action figures that you won’t want to let slip by!

CustomCon 39 is coming! Entry deadline is August 1.

Weekend Toy Run: The AFP “Two/Bad” Movie Poster T-Shirt and More – Save 15%

Two-Bad parody movie poster t-shirt

Did you know that June 21st will be the 8th International T-Shirt Day? I’m pretty sure that it was invented by our t-shirt partner, but made-up commemorative day irregardless, they’re giving us a 15% discount starting today and running through T-Shirt Day (the 21st again). And just for that, we’ve made a special t-shirt for the occasion, featuring one of our favorite Masters of the Universe Classics figures – Two-Bad. The Two/Bad movie poster t-shirt is a riff on one of our favorite terrible yet awesome movies from the 90s. Can you name that movie?

The Two/Bad Movie Poster t-shirt is available on the rarely publicized Fan Tribute T-shirts page on AFP. While you’re there, check out our Avengers: Age of Ultron “Obey” t-shirt (and more!) and use “TSHIRT2015” code to get your 15% off. That code also works on the regular Spreadshirt site.

Mattycollector June Early Access Starts, SDCC Voucher Sale Ends 6/11

All Access starts on 6/15

Matycollector June sale - Multi-Bot, Sssqueeze, Man-at-Arms

Thursday morning we’ll see the start of Mattycollector’s June sale with Early Access, and then Thursday night they’ll close up their SDCC voucher sale.

The June sale is all Masters of the Universe Classics. The two primary Club Eternia releases are Sssqueeze (the monthly for June) and Multi-Bot (a quarterly deluxe figure). Both won’t be available during Early Access, because I suppose Mattel continues to think it doesn’t make sense to give your best customers (the subscribers) the chance to buy more figures. They do have Snake Face (April 2013) and Tung Lashor (November 2014) up again. And, because these are probably selling poorly, the Giant Man-At-Arms will be available in Early Access too. Early Access for June starts at 8AM PT on 6/11. All Access is at 9AM PT on 6/15.

The mystery items that were not available at the start of the SDCC voucher sale were revealed to be Halo exclusives from Mega Blocks (a micro figure pack) and BOOMco (foam dart guns that we can’t say are from Nerf). Three items have sold out so far – two of the three Ever After / Monster High dolls, and the Hot Wheels Marvel Secret War 3-pack. Everything else is still up for grabs. Happy shopping!
