AFP Ask Matty Round-Up for 11/1/10

Hey Mattel fans – it’s time for the newest Q&A session of Ask Matty! Thanks to Toy Guru and the gang at Mattel, and happy Monday!

1) Superman/Batman: Apocalypse was recently released, and featured Ed Asner reprising his role as Granny Goodness. What’s it going to take to get a Granny Goodness figure in DC Universe Classics?

Increased fan demand. When the “Crisis on Two Earths” DVD came out there was skyrocketing demand for the Crime Syndicate but that died down soon after. We’ll have to see how Granny’s appearance in this DVD plays out with fans in the long run.

Ringside Fest 2010 – Mattel Shows New WWE Figures

Not being a regular reader at WrestlingFigs.com, I didn’t know that they held a special event with Mattel’s WWE team this past weekend in New York City. But I did find some pictures of upcoming figures at the Mattel WWE and fan Jason Linnick’s Facebook pages. I’m particularly psyched to see the Defining Moments Ultimate Warrior, and Legends Series 5 – Akeem the African Dream, Macho Man Randy Savage, the Model Rick Martel, and Bam Bam Bigelow.

This weekend the Mattel WWE team went to NYC for Ringside Fest, the WWE collecting convention sponsored by Ringside Collectibles. We had a great time showing off new figures, talking face-to-face with collectors, and answering questions during the fan Q&A. We posted a few pictures below, but stay tuned to WrestlingFigs.com for continuing coverage this week.

AFP Ask Matty Round-Up for 10/15/10

Hey Mattel fans – it’s time for the newest Q&A session of Ask Matty!  Thanks to Toy Guru and the gang at Mattel, and happy Friday!

1) It seems like Warner Bros. Animation has settled into a pretty regular schedule of 3 animated features a year. Next year they’ve got All-Star Superman, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, and Batman: Year One on the slate. These would seem like a great match for toys – marquis DC characters in great stories. What are Mattel’s plans for toys for these animated features, and how do you decide whether you want to jump on board or not?

Sorry, it is way too early for us to discuss that deep into 2011 at this time.

2) We’ve often talked about how one of the ways DC Universe Classics has been able to succeed is that you’ve been able to re-use basic tooling in creative ways to make a wide variety of characters. Does that mean that characters or items that would presumably require a lot of new tooling, like Granny Goodness, or a Mobius Chair for Metron, would have a pretty tough time making their way into upcoming line-ups? What would be the best way to get essential characters for completing themes into the line – box sets? Online exclusives? Con exclusives?

There are plenty of uniquely tool’d figures in the DCUC line. Demon and Ares come to mind. Shared tooling just means that not EVERY figure needs a 100% new tool, but it doesn’t mean some won’t need that!

Mattel WWE Toys R Us Exclusive Bushwhackers and More Quick Pics

Mattel WWE - The Bushwhackers.JPG

To be perfectly honest, even though the Bushwhackers came from the era of wrestling that I watched and enjoyed, I was never that big of a fan. They were more of a comedy act that I found amusing at first, but quickly tired of it.

That said, I must now acknowledge that as far as all the wrestling figures I have in my collection, which includes a bunch of old Hasbro WWF figures, JAKKS Pacific WWE figures, and the new figures from Mattel, the Bushwhackers are now at the top of the heap. They’re just captured perfectly in plastic here.
