NYCC 2015: Square Enix Play Arts Kai – Batman v Superman, Marvel Variants, and More

NYCC 2015 - Square Enix Play Arts Kai

I have been a fan of Square Enix’s Play Arts Kai line for some time, but with price creep pushing single figures to the $100 range and more, I’ve curtailed my purchases somewhat. I may have to go hog wild on some of their newest reveals though. Most notably, Square Enix expanded their DC license to include Batman v Superman, revealing four figures – Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Bats in his armored suit. While I’ve been particularly disappointed by what some licensees (ahem Mattel) have produced, these are the first to really pique my interest.

While Street Fighter has seemingly gone to the wayside, they’ve continued with their mainstays. DC continues with more Arkham and variant figures. The newer Marvel variants add Black Widow and Captain America. And there’s Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid, and Halo, to name a few more.

Mattycollector June Early Access Starts, SDCC Voucher Sale Ends 6/11

All Access starts on 6/15

Matycollector June sale - Multi-Bot, Sssqueeze, Man-at-Arms

Thursday morning we’ll see the start of Mattycollector’s June sale with Early Access, and then Thursday night they’ll close up their SDCC voucher sale.

The June sale is all Masters of the Universe Classics. The two primary Club Eternia releases are Sssqueeze (the monthly for June) and Multi-Bot (a quarterly deluxe figure). Both won’t be available during Early Access, because I suppose Mattel continues to think it doesn’t make sense to give your best customers (the subscribers) the chance to buy more figures. They do have Snake Face (April 2013) and Tung Lashor (November 2014) up again. And, because these are probably selling poorly, the Giant Man-At-Arms will be available in Early Access too. Early Access for June starts at 8AM PT on 6/11. All Access is at 9AM PT on 6/15.

The mystery items that were not available at the start of the SDCC voucher sale were revealed to be Halo exclusives from Mega Blocks (a micro figure pack) and BOOMco (foam dart guns that we can’t say are from Nerf). Three items have sold out so far – two of the three Ever After / Monster High dolls, and the Hot Wheels Marvel Secret War 3-pack. Everything else is still up for grabs. Happy shopping!

SDCC 2014: Square Enix Play Arts Kai

It’s always a joy for me to visit the Square Enix booth at events like SDCC – they’ve always got a slew of their Play Arts Kai figures from their video games, DC, and movie licenses. Most of the usual suspects were there – notably, DC Variant figures continue to see heavy activity (sadly, my picture the most interesting of them, the Harley Quinn, was blurry).

Some licenses are seeing a slow-down, at least in terms of display space. I saw only one Halo figure, while Street Fighter and Rorschach from Watchmen was a no-show, despite the fact that it hasn’t hit production yet. The Square Enix rep couldn’t definitively explain Rorschach’s absence, but it may be as simple as a lack of display space. However, with no other Watchmen figures on display, I wonder if that DC sub-license has stalled.

The next HALO offering from 3A Toys will be up for pre-order in a week’s time. More info will be forthcoming, like the price. For reference, Commander Carter was priced at $200 when he went up for pre-order a little over a year ago.

The pre-order window usually opens up in the evenings here in the US, mornings in Hong Kong – that accounts for the date discrepancy, for the time-zone challenged.
