CustomCon 38 – Winter 2014

The staff at AFP is pleased to announce that we will be hosting CustomCon 38. This edition of CustomCon will be held this December, joining the CustomCon events hosted throughout the year by Raving Toy Maniac and JoeAcevedo.com.

Event Dates

CustomCon 38 will run the week of December 15, 2014.

Entry Deadline

The submission deadline is Friday, December 5, 2014. No entries will be accepted after this date.

What is CustomCon?

CustomCon is a special presentation of new custom toy creations by customizers around the globe. Fourteen years in the running, it’s still going strong. Inspired by the presentations of new product by legitimate manufacturers at Toy Fair and other trade shows, CustomCon is a “fake” convention, wherein customizers present their latest creations and recipes as if unveiling a new line of real toys to retailers. It’s always a lot of fun for both the viewers and the participants.

If this is your first exposure to a CustomCon, check out what’s been offered over the past 37 CustomCons, including the CustomCon entries that have been featured here at AFP.

NYCC 2014: Mezco Adds a Bad-Ass Judge Dredd to One:12 Collective

Mezco One:12 Collective Judge Dredd

I fell in love with Mezco’s take on Batman from the Dark Knight Returns back at SDCC, and they’ve knocked it out of the park again with Judge Dredd. Dredd is the latest reveal from their One:12 Collective, a multi-license, mixed media, six-inch scale, super-articulated action figure line.

It’s an ambitious undertaking right from the start. It’s tough to get fabric apps to work well in this scale, and to do it over a super-articulated body is a daunting prospect. Batman was shown in a variety of poses and held up pretty well in this regard. Dredd, on the other hand, has been limited to more vanilla stances – so while I’m certain Mezco will get it right, I’m wondering if they’ve still got more work to do to get the figure looking right in more action-heavy poses.

Not sold? Consider this – Mez hinted heavily at SDCC that a six-inch scale Lawmaster could be on the way. Regardless, I’m in – just waiting for Mezco to put Dredd up for pre-order. Mezco recently announced that pre-orders on Batman have been brisk with nearly half the pre-order allocation sold in the first day – despite a $65 price tag – so you might want to get on that now or risk a sell-out.

NYCC 2014: Hasbro and 3DPlusMe Make You the Super Hero

It’s a kid’s (and this particular adult’s) dream come true. In a collaboration worthy of Marvel Team-Up, Hasbro and 3DPlusMe have joined forces to make you and me into super heros – in action figure form at least. We got to try out the experience last night at Hasbro’s ‘Twas the Night Before extravaganza, and it was a blast. Sure, with 3DPlusMe’s digital artists tuning up our head sculpts, we’ve got a cliff-hanger straight from the comic books – it will be four to six weeks until we have our own Rescue 12-inch action figure, featuring Cara inside the Iron Man armor.

We all know who Hasbro is, but if you are curious about 3DPlusMe, they were spawned from the acquisition of Digital PlaySpace by 3D Systems, the same company that acquired Gentle Giant. 3D printing has permeated the manufacturing industry primarily due to its strengths in rapid prototyping, and at the time of the acquisitions, I wondered what we might see in terms of more mass market-oriented applications. We’re starting to see the pay-off – Super Awesome Me is making its debut in Toys ‘R Us Times Square today and FAO Schwarz tomorrow.

Toy Guru Shares 2015 Masters of the Universe Classics Update – Video

2015 Masters of the Universe Classics Update

Mattel may not be making its previously scheduled stop at New York Comic Con this year, but to make up for it, Toy Guru posted a rather substantial video update for the Masters of the Universe Classics line. Clocking in at nearly 12 minutes, it’s as much content as you’d likely have gotten if you were sitting in the Mattypalooza panel just for the MOTUC portion. And then there’s the added bonus of Toy Guru actually demonstrating each figure’s articulation and accessories, complete with the occasional figure knockdowns.

One thing you will miss without an actual panel this time around is the Q&A portion – for example, what finally caused the policy change that allowed not only 200X heads but a complete 200X two-pack into the line? By the power of Grayskull!

NYCC 2014: Hasbro Shares Press Pics from ‘Twas the Night Before Party

Marvel Infinite Series Wave 2

The mood lighting at Hasbro’s ‘Twas the Night Before (New York Comic Con) party was great for getting us in a festive mood, but is hell on the smart phone I have convinced myself is better than lugging around a few pounds of camera gear. (How’d I do? Check out my own pics from the event.) But Hasbro planned ahead, sharing press pics of pretty much all the reveals from this evening’s soiree.

And of course, we’re sharing them with you. We’ve got the official pics from Marvel, Star Wars, Transformers, KRE-O, and the latest of the Angry Birds mash-ups – Angry Birds Transformers. Enjoy!
