Weekend Toy Run: Transformers Age of Extinction First Edition Optimus Prime on Amazon

TRANSFORMERS FIRST EDITION OPTIMUS PRIME Open Package

The next installment in the Transformers movie franchise, Age of Extinction, isn’t due to hit theaters until late in June. The normal shelf date for movie toys is usually 3 months in advance of the opening. However, since the movie got a teaser spot in the Big (maybe not so fitting a descriptor this year) Game, Hasbro has jumped on board with something novel. Teaming up with Amazon, they launched the Transformers HQ on Amazon immediately following the airing of the teaser, and are offering up the first edition Transformers: Age of Extinction Optimus Prime.

That’s two Transformers exclusives with two different retailers launched on 2/2 – the first we covered was the Year of the Horse Starscream that’s exclusive to TRU. I checked the Toys R Us website for Starscream – the exclusive isn’t available online yet, but you might want to keep checking.

Hasbro Transformers Starscream – Year of the Horse Toys R Us Exclusive

Our good pal trs sent us a couple of pics of the Year of the Horse Platinum Edition Starscream. It’s exclusive to Toys R Us, and should hit shelves with a $109.99 price tag. The official shelf date is February 2nd, but you might see them out early – after all, today is the Lunar New Year, which kicks off the start of the Year of the Horse. (You could also ask a stock person to check in the back for you.)

In the meantime… 恭禧發財 / Kung Hei Fat Choi (Cantonese) / Gong Xi Fa Cai (Mandarin) – Happy New Year!

Star Wars Black Series Sandtrooper 4

There were a lot of amazing toys this year, and a return to larger scale figures, which is very welcome.

I have narrowed my favorites down to two.

Transformers Year of the Dragon Ultimate Optimus Prime Cyber Monday Deal at Amazon.com – $42.49 Until 2:20PM PST

It’s already the Year of the Snake, and soon will be the Year of the Horse (the next Chinese New Year is January 31, 2014, for those of you planning toy production at Chinese factories) – that might explain why Amazon has the Transformers Year of the Dragon Ultimate Optimus Prime as part of its Cyber Monday Deals Week. It’s discounted to $42.49 from a list price of  $89.99 until 2:20PM PST, or while supplies last.

I’m not a huge Transformers fan, so I hadn’t seen this humongous beast before – but apparently this repaint was an Asian exclusive that was available in 2012, naturally, since that was the Year of the Dragon. Gung hay fat choy! (That’s Happy New Year in Chinese, you heathens!)

Border Patrol: G.I. JOE Firefly, Transformers Grimlock, and Marvel Legends Deadpool

G.I. JOE Firefly Transformers Grimlock Marvel Legends Deadpool

This week we’ve got customs from across three of the major Hasbro brands:

  • G.I. JOE Firefly by by Stronox – good things do come in little packages – Firefly comes decked out with a ton of accessories – if you like the work, Stronox also has a Storm Shadow up this week – ends Nov 14, 2013 10:15:51 PST
  • Transformers Masterpiece Grimlock by encline_designs – ok, maybe you have a Masterpiece Grimlock already – do you have one with the headsculpt based on his look in the IDW comics? – ends Nov 14, 2013 21:31:14 PST
  • Marvel Legends Deadpool by Rat Pack Studios – there’s another Deadpool up this week, from a somewhat notorious customizer who’s been accused of shill bidding on his auctions, but it’s a mishmash of costume elements from Deadpool’s various looks over time – this custom is specific and truer to the look during a very popular run in the comics, and it comes with a customized scooter from that run – awesome! – ends Nov 21, 2013 18:48:44 PST

Kickstart BMOG – Weapons and Accessories that Combine into Robot Animals

releaseday1-bear releaseday1-arsenal-300x239 manta-ray-comboed manta-and-ray-300x233

With your help, we could be launching another small toy company with the aim of producing action figures, with a twist – the robot animal figures are made out of weapons and accessories that work with themselves or with your other toy lines. BMOG Toys just began their Kickstarter campaign to get the first two figures, a bear and a manta ray, tooled up and launched.

Sounds similar to what our pals at Spy Monkey Creations has done with the Weaponeers of Monkaa, but with BMOG (Bio-Mechanical Ordnance Gestalts), the figures and the weapons are one and the same. The Spy Monkey weapons packs have their roots very much in Masters of the Universe Classics. BMOG has its roots in Transformers – the project team members have worked with Hasbro. You can find more info on the BMOG Toys website.

If you weren’t convinced at San Diego Comic-Con that Construct-Bots were going to be the driving force for the Transformers line this year, maybe this slew of product imagery will. There’s a ton of them coming out for the holidays, including new Beast Hunters-themed figures.

NYCC 2013: Hasbro Transformers Generations Optimus Prime Leader Scale Reveal

Hasbro NYCC Transformers Reveals

If you were hoping for a lot of Transformers reveals from last night’s Hasbro pre-NYCC party, I hate to disappoint you. For their traditional lines, they put out a Generation Leader scale Optimus Prime.

I don’t follow Transformers closely enough to know, but it seems like with the hit movies a couple years back, maybe it’s a bit slower at retail for the brand. But as we’ll see, the new Construct-Bots line is going strong.
