AFP Ask Matty Round-Up for 3/15/11

We didn’t get the answers for the 3/15 edition of Ask Matty until late in the evening, so we’ll open up the day with them.

Thanks to the Mattel team!

1) We very much enjoyed all you had on display at Toy Fair. For DC Universe Classics, it seems like there was a move to themed waves with Blackest Night and Superfriends. Will later waves continue with a themed approach? We’re curious because with the themes, there seems to be less opportunity to fill in members for groups and teams you’ve started, like New Gods, Doom Patrol, the JSA, and the Metal Men.

Doing themed waves is something we tried out for Wave 17, 18 and a little bit in 19. Starting with 20, the themes will go away.

AFP Ask Matty Round-Up for 3/1/11

Here’s our first Ask Matty since Mattel’s showing at Toy Fair. Let us know if you’ve got other questions you want answered. Read the full article and leave a reply below.

Thanks to the Mattel team for this round of questions and answers.

1) You really had us fooled when you told us that folks had lost interest in the Crime Syndicate – they all look great! What was the thinking behind mixing up modern and classic costumes, and what should folks expect for how long they might need to wait to complete either team?

The upcoming Wal-Mart Crime Syndicate five-pack was designed by the Horsemen to create the most definitive version of each character. We may indeed revisit the Syndicate in time (as there were many looks for the members) but nothing to confirm right now.

Toy Fair 2011 – Four Horsemen Interview – Part 1 with Eric Treadaway

Four Horsemen Mattel Toy Fair 2011 (1280x719).jpg
Four Horsemen and Mattel (l to r): Chris Dahlberg, Steed Sun (Mattel), Eric "Cornboy" Mayse, Eric Treadaway, and Jim Preziosi

The Four Horsemen have a Four Horsemen Fridays feature on their website, so we’ll hop on their coat tails for that. Hagop and I got to sit down with two of them at Mattel’s Collector Event at Toy Fair. It was really a treat talking to them, while surrounded by the 2-ups and prototypes of the action figures they’ve designed.

In our first part, we talk with Eric Treadaway, designer and sculptor, about Masters of the Universe Classics, DC Universe Classics, and fan reaction to some of the controversial reveals. We’ll post the second part, our conversation with Cornboy, on the Fwoosh next week.

Toy Fair 2011 – Funko Vinyl Figures – DC, Thor Movie, and More

Funko (1280x720).jpg

Yeah, I know – I’m still posting updates about Toy Fair, now a couple weekends past. I wish that toys were a full-time gig for me, but it’s just a hobby. And, in some cases, not a “break the bank” hobby. Case in point – these vinyl figures from Funko. These will run you between $6 and $10 most places.

They’ve got a boatload of DC figures and just added the Thor Movie license to their stable. On top of that, there’s a bunch of pop culture licenses in the mix too, with some 80s movie franchises and music figures too. Who wouldn’t want to rock and roll all night with these versions of Kiss?

DC Universe Classics Wave 16 Riddler, Jonah Hex, and Robin

Time to put up some DC Universe Classics 16 pics! If you hadn’t heard or seen it yet, DCUC 16 is starting to hit retail stores now. I found my little set of 3 at Target last week.

Why only 3? Several reasons. For one, due to rising costs and shrinking shelf space, I need to be a bit more discriminating in my collecting and the Metal Men are getting cut, so no Mercury. When Creeper was first announced, I was excited about getting him but I don’t like how he turned out, way too skinny and gangly for my taste, so no Creeper. Golden Age Head Robin didn’t even enter the equation from the word go. The design for the C&C Bane was also not to my liking. I will be getting Azrael-Batman but he is coming from a friend in another town and I hope to find the All Star Reissue of Deathstroke or maybe Amazon will finally come through for me. I’ll do an article for both of those when I have ’em.
