SDCC 2015 (and WebSwipe): Hasbro Reveals Exclusive Marvel Legends Dr. Strange Box Set – USAToday.com

Marvel Legends Dr. Strange SDCC 2015 exclusive box set

We’ve been anxiously awaiting news for Hasbro’s Marvel exclusive for San Diego Comic-Con, and USAToday.com broke the news – it’s a Marvel Legends box set built around Dr. Strange. With the Benedict Cumberbatch movie scheduled for November 2016, I’m guessing Marvel will do some teasers at their panel this year, but I wonder if this set may have been better suited for SDCC next year.

The packaging is a novel concept (no book-pun intended) – it’s in the form of Dr. Strange’s Book of the Vishanti. In the pages preceding the figures, the Book will feature artwork and profiles for the five figures included. We’ll get to them momentarily, but first wanted to highlight that included with the book is another prop – the mystical talisman, the Eye of Agamotto. With the Book of the Vishanti and the Eye of Agamotto in your possession, all you need to add is your own Cloak of Levitation, and you could be the next Sorcerer Supreme.

The figures themselves are a strange mix (also no pun intended.) The ones that make sense to me are Dr. Strange, in a translucent deco variant from the one that will ship with the Marvel Legends Hulkbuster wave; Brother Voodoo, who succeeded Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme; and Dormammu, Strange’s arch-enemy and ruler of the Dark Dimension. The inclusion of Hela and Magik (in her Marvel Now Darkchylde armor) seem tacked on. It may be lack of comic knowledge on my part, but I don’t know when Dr. Strange has had any significant interaction with the Goddess of Hel from Thor’s mythology or with the mutant sorceress and ruler of Limbo. While I’m not complaining to get either, I think the box set would have been stronger with Clea and Wong as supporting characters for Strange.

At $104.99, these sets are seeing a small price creep – the Thanos Imperative set from last year was $99.99

Hot Toys Announces Avengers: Age of Ultron Scarlet Witch

Hot Toys Avengers Age of Ultron Scarlet Witch 01

As much as I like the original Avengers, after all of their redos, it’s nice to get to one of the new heroes. Scarlet Witch sports the haunted likeness of Elizabeth Olsen. She comes with a bunch of different hands and chaos magic blast effects for a variety of spell-casting poses – I really like the red translucent deco that some of them have.

We’ll be checking on Sideshow for pre-orders. You think we’ll see Quicksilver next? Never anger a witch!

Pre-Order the Marvel Legends Ultron / Ant-Man Wave at Amazon

Build Ultron Prime, get Ant-Man, and complete the Wrecking Crew!

Marvel Legends Ultron (Ant-Man) wave

For a single wave of Marvel Legends, it sure has a lot going on. Known officially as the Ultron wave, it’s tied into the blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron movie with Ultron Prime as the Build-a-Figure. Unofficially, it’s also being called the Ant-Man wave – it’s got Scott Lang in the movie Ant-Man costume and Janet Van Dyne and Hank Pym in their comic-based Wasp and Giant Man costumes respectively. And last but not least, it includes two of the figures that were “lost” when Hasbro revamped the distribution model and shelved the running change variants – one of those is Bulldozer, who finally completes the Wrecking Crew.

You can pre-order all six of the Marvel Legends Ultron / Ant-Man figures at Amazon. If you want to cherry-pick:

Happy shopping!

Border Patrol: Marvel Legends Thor, Space Ghost, and Daredevil

Border Patrol - Marvel Legends Thor (female), Space Ghost, and Daredevil (Netflix red)

It’s a grab bag of sorts for this week’s Border Patrol:

  • Marvel Legends Thor (female) by Jufri Sukmana: The costume design doesn’t match up with what I’ve seen of the (spoiler) Jane Foster Thor that is currently worthy, but it makes for a striking action figure regardless. This one ends in a couple hours, so be quick if you want to bid. Ends today at 10:54AM PST.
  • Space Ghost (movie concept) by Nuffsaid: I normally have to ignore most movie designs as being over-engineered for that high-tech look. But if they ever made a Space Ghost movie and this were the costume they used, I’d be pretty pleased with it – it stays pretty true to the classic. Ends Wednesday June 3, at 5:40PM PST.
  • Marvel Legends Daredevil (Netflix red) by thor333uspb: Marvel recently announced some licensing deals for the Daredevil series on Netflix, but action figures were not among them. That’s not necessarily telling, since I think Hasbro and/or Diamond Select Toys would already be licensees, but thus far neither has revealed any plans. So the customs will keep coming. This one in particular has great sculpted details for the armor. Ends Saturday, June 6, at 7:08PM PST.

In AFP’s Border Patrol, we scour active eBay auctions for customized action figures that you won’t want to let slip by!

SDCC 2015: Mattycollector Exclusives Pre-Order Early Access Starts Today

Mattycollector SDCC 2015 voucher pre-order

If you’re attending San Diego Comic-Con and are interested in the Mattycollector exclusives, Early Access for Mattel’s SDCC exclusives will open to Club Eternia subscribers at 8AM PST this morning. You’ll be able to pre-order exclusives from Masters of the Universe Classics, Ghostbusters, Monster / Ever After High, and more. You’ll get a voucher which you take to the show and exchange for your exclusives at the Torrey Pines room at the Marriot San Diego Hotel and Marina, which is next door to the Convention Center.

While I’m not a fan of having to leave the floor to pick up more stuff to lug back, it’s generally preferable to taking your chances at the Matty booth on the floor – the lines can get long, and the more popular items do sell out. In the past, that’s been the Monster High stuff, but you can never really be sure what will be hot. I’m thinking the Hover Robots.

I’m happy to be heading back to SDCC this year, but Mattel’s exclusives offer some melancholy – this will be the first year since I’ve been going that Mattel hasn’t had a 6-inch scaled DC exclusive in collaboration with the Four Horsemen. I’m still holding onto the torch that Mattel will find a way to bring back DC Universe Classics. I know, I know.
