Ask Matty Q&A for 9/15 (a Couple Days Early!)

Once again, Toy Guru and team are a few days early with their responses for the latest Ask Matty Q&A. Thanks!

1. A lot of collectors still want to get the unleashed version of Doomsday. Is it possible to offer him individually on Mattycollector, or even as the SDCC exclusive in 2014?

DC Universe Classics Club Eternia Doomsday Unleashed DC Universe Classics Club Eternia Doomsday Unleashed (2 of 2)

No. Doomsday was only possible when banked along with 12 partial tool’d figures at tier 2 production quotas. It is not possible to just do Doomsday by himself. His production was tied directly to producing a full year of partially tool’d basic figures at the higher tier 2 quota. After not even hitting tier 1, it becomes that much more difficult to get to this “bigger” more tooling intensive version of Doomsday. We hope this was made clear during the sub-in period.

Masters of the Universe Classics Jet Sled, DC Universe Classics Huntress and Comedian Headline Mattycollector September Sale

Mattycollector September Sale

For a month with the regular Club Eternia figure pushed out by a month (October will have Lord Dactus and Mantenna doubled up), it still feels like there’s a lot to buy. That’s because the Jet Sled vehicle, potentially the front half to a Battle Ram, is on sale with a pilot called Sky High. The Jet Sled and pilot cost $50, raising the question of why include another random figure. Sure, there were palace guards that rode the Jet Sleds during the original cartoon, but things really got exciting when Teela, Man-at-Arms, or He-Man jumped on one to go chase some Evil Warriors. I think Mattel missed out on a potential army builder vehicle here.

On the DC front,we’re coming down to the wire on Club Infinite Earths and Watchmen with Huntress and the Comedian. I’m still a little shocked that I’m going from three subs this year down to none in 2014, since I’ve decided to cherry-pick Masters of the Universe Classics (when Mattel offers day of sale) and DC was canceled.

Early Access starts Thursday at 8AM PST and will run for a day. Kudos to Mattel – even though their announcement makes no mention of it, the Jet Sled will be available, joining DCUC Poison Ivy and MOTUC Stratos. For convenience, here’s the link to Early Access. The regular sale starts on Monday at 9AM PST.

Marvel Select The Wolverine Quick Pics by ActionFiguresRule

Marvel Select - The Wolverine 09 Marvel Select - The Wolverine 17

Our good friend Richard, aka ActionFiguresRule, from the MATRIX Photo Booth and AFR Studio pinged me to see if we’d done anything with the Marvel Select Wolverine from Diamond Select Toys. Not yet, I told him, because I haven’t yet picked him up. He said he’d send me a couple of pics – and before I knew it, I had almost 20 sitting in my email. And he says there’s more to come…

The more I see of the figure, the more I’m convinced it’s the best value from DST’s Marvel Select line yet. The figure has got a great sculpt from Gentle Giant, with probably the best likeness for Hugh Jackman outside Hot Toys. It’s got a ton of articulation. I’ve heard from DST before that they are limited by their license as to how many points of articulation that they can add. I suspect that modern joints that provide multiple axes of movement, like an ab crunch / swivel, must still count as one. On top of that, there’s 3 pairs of hands, 3 heads, and a katana. Looks like I have another purchase to make.

Mattel’s New DC Total Heroes and DC Comics Multiverse Lines for Retail are Up for Pre-Order

I foolishly skipped Mattel’s DC panel at SDCC this year. In my defense, in years past, it was usually a rehash of the DC portion of the Mattypalooza panel with some kid-oriented toys on top of that. I had no idea that this year they’d be announcing the demise of the spiritual successors of DC Universe Classics at retail, the Batman Unlimited and DC Unlimited lines, and that they’d be launching two new retail lines in 2014. Now that online retailers have put up their pre-orders for them, I’m getting my first real look at DC Total Heroes and DC Comics Multiverse.

DC Total Heroes is Mattel’s re-envisioning of 6-inch action figures for retail. Each of the four figures (Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Sinestro) from the first wave sports their New 52 looks, but veers from the DC Universe Classics aesthetic to a new, somewhat animated look. With a reduction in articulation and paint apps, Mattel was able to reduce the price point, with online retailers charging $12.99 per figure. That seems to be one of the key selling points of the new line.

DC Collectibles Solicits Reveal Arkham City Series 2 and the Remaining New 52 Crime Syndicate

BatmanArkhamOrigins_Deadshot BatmanArkhamOrigins_Deathstroke BatmanArkhamOrigins_Firefly

DC Collectibles played the Spoiler Alert game with the Batman: Arkham Origins Anarky earlier, and he won’t be alone. The latest solicits reveal the full second series of Arkham Origins figures. Joining Anarky are Deadshot, Deadpool Deathstroke, and Firefly. They will be out in March next year.

We saw the full reveal of DC Collectible’s New 52 Crime Syndicate last week. The solicits show that Johnny Quick (with Atomica) and Owlman are also due in March next year. Last month’s solicits showed that Ultraman, Superwoman, and Power Ring are coming in February.
