STGCC 2013: Play Imaginative Super Alloy Iron Man

STGCC 2013 Play Imaginative Iron Man 4

Jedd has sent in an update from the Singapore Toy, Game, and Comic Convention – he’s visited the Play Imaginative booth and shared this report on the Super Alloy Iron Man diecast line. I’m really amazed that PI is so aggressively targeting the Marvel brand that’s been Hot Toys’ bread and butter for the past few years. Jedd writes:

Play Imaginative trucked out an incredible display of practically every Iron Man armour that has been in the movies, in six inch scale (just prototypes at this point, there are no plans to release every last one). There were also figures in 12 inch scale and 18 inch scale, with a central display of an 18 inch scale Hall of Armour. The Mark VII figure comes with several heads, and what is interesting is that one of them is Pepper in the helmet; Gwyneth Paltrow’s likeness.

Ask Matty Q&A for 8/31

Just in time for labor day weekend, here’s the Ask Matty Q&A for  8/31. Thanks to Toy Guru and team for answering our questions.

1) You’ve said that 2014 and 2015 would have characters that required more tooling, like Two Bad and Modulok. What does that mean for the number of subscribers needed to support the line? For example, do you need to increase the minimum subscribers needed to support more tooling?

Masters of the Universe Classics Two Bad Masters of the Universe Classics Modulok

No, the min number of sub holders has stayed the same year to year, we are just very strategic in banking a few fully tool’d figures with other partial tool figures so the year balances out.

Weekend Toy Run: Mattel Batman and Robin 2-Pack and Toys R Us Batmobile Exclusive

DC Comics Classic TV Series Batman and Robin Action Figure, 2-Pack DC Comics Classic TV Series Batman and Robin Action Figure, 2-Pack 2 Mattel Batman Classic TV Series Batmobile

So far I have been successful in resisting the Batman Classic TV Series line of figures. Don’t get me wrong – I grew up on re-runs of the Adam West / Burt Ward series and have a real love for the show. As a kid, I had a small diecast version of the Batmobile, and it was awesome! It had tiny versions of the dynamic duo that could fit in the cockpit – they could fit in the Batboat I had too. The car had a bunch of action features – the front had a chopping blade that popped out, the wheel rims included a bat symbol that came out to pop the tires of bad guy vehicles, the tubes on the trunk actually fired little red missles, and the flames in the exhaust port pulsated when you spun the wheels.

One of the reasons I’ve held out on the new toys is that I couldn’t see having the figures without the Batmobile, which is a Toys R Us exclusive. I’ve come to the realization that in the digital age, toy runs just aren’t as fun, and that’s been my excuse for not staking out the nearest TRUs for the Batmobile. But that’s becoming moot.

For one thing, the Batman and Robin 2-pack is back down to $29 and change on Amazon – there was a time that they had sold through their stock, and 3rd party sellers had bumped the price to nearly $50. On top of that, I found that while it’s not available for shipping, ToysRUs.com can check your local store’s inventory for the Batmobile and hold it for you to pick up. Using it, I can see that the Batmobile is in stock at the two TRUs nearby. At $59 and change, it’s a great deal when you keep the $215 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 in mind. But I’m pretty sure my wife will give me the evil eye if I bring home a 1/12 scale Batmobile. Someone, anyone, please talk me down off the toy buying ledge!

Frank Kozik’s Marvel Mini Labbits Hopping onto Kidrobot on September 12th

MRVL_MINI_LABBIT_BLOG_POST MarvelLabbitMiniFigs

While we’re on the subject of designer urban vinyl toys, here’s an update on the Marvel Mini Labbits from artist Frank Kozik that are being produced by Kidrobot. They are being released on September 12th, and will feature an assortment of ten characters in blind boxed packaging, for $9.99 each. I don’t know if Kozik is a big Marvel fan, but his picks for characters are unique enough (read: not just the top 10 Marvel characters) to make me think he is. In addition to miniaturizing Venom and Wolverine, Kozik has included the Red Skull, Loki, Ghost Rider, Doctor Octopus, Doctor Doom, the Punisher, Deadpool, and Galactus in this assortment. Gotta love the villains and anti-heroes!

In addition Kozik will be touring the Kidrobot stores to promote the Kidrobot / Marvel collaboration. If you can’t make it to one of their retail locations, you can still get the Marvel Mini Labbits at Kidrobot – at least after September 12th.

STGCC 2013: Interview with Army of Snipers by Jedd

STGCC 2013 Army of Snipers

Luke Chueh, Aaron “Angry Woebots” Martin, and Jesse “J*RYU” Yu of Army of Snipers

At last year’s Singapore Toy, Game, and Comic Convention, Jedd conducted a great interview with Max Toy Co’s Mark Nagata. This year, he shares with us a great conversation he had with with Angry Woebots, J*RYU, and Luke Chueh from the Army of Snipers. The Army of Snipers is an international collective of artists, with a wide variety of backgrounds including street artists, videographers, photographers, painters, sculptors, musicians, and graphic designers.

Angry Woebots, aka Aaron, started the group in 2011, and is well known for his designer resin figures and vinyl toys. J*RYU is a west coast-based sculptor and artist well-known for his Forest of Sorrows, the ongoing story of the ghost girl who haunts his works. And Luke Chueh is an award-winning graphic designer and painter active in the artist community in Los Angeles.

Jedd: Aaron, in 2008 you designed the album artwork for Fall Out Boy. If you could choose another musician to work with, who would it be and why?

Aaron: I’m a huge Muse fan, I’d love to work with Muse. I’m a huge Explosions in the Sky fan, and also Mogwai. Even the Killers, I’m a huge Killers fan, or Beck too. I think those are…Cornelius I would love to work with.
