Mattel Announces San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive Masters of the Universe Classics Mini He-Man & Skeletor Figures

For their final SDCC exclusive reveal of the week, Mattel unveiled a possible line extension for its Masters of the Universe Classics line – Mini Masters! We had seen stylized mini-MOTU figures previously at San Diego, with the cryptic messaging that they were trying to find a home for this new cute but deadly format. Mattel has found them a tie-in with the popular He-Man: The Most Powerful Game in the Universe download for your iPhone and iPad. (Android users take heart – He-Man is still making his way to Android devices.)

For now, we’ve got He-Man and Skeletor as exclusives – but if they’re popular, maybe we’ll be seeing more next year on MattyCollector.com. Best thing is that these new figures are in scale with the upcoming Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskull. I kid! I KID!

Mattel also announced they’d be bringing the last of the remaining Back to the Future Hover Boards to the show.

Great things come in small packages! At long last, the fan demanded mini versions of He-Man® and Skeletor®… in a foldout mini Castle Grayskull® diorama package! Each figure has six points of articulation at the arms, legs, waist and neck, and comes with snap-on accessories such as a power sword, shield and havoc staff. He-Man® features a shield with traditional j-hook, allowing it to be held out in front instead of clipped onto his arm!

This product will be available for pre-order at MattyCollector.com on June 4, 2013, to be picked up at San Diego Comic-Con (details to come). It will also be available for purchase at the show, then at MattyCollector.com on August 5, 2013.

Icon Heroes Announces Filmation He-Man Mini-Bust, Q&A with Designer Joe Amaro

Icon Heroes He-Man Mini-Bust

Icon Heroes has really been on a tear in recent days. Their Castle Grayskull Polystone Environment is coming out this month, and they’ve just announced another Masters of the Universe item – the He-Man Mini-Bust Paperweight.

Keep your papers safe from Eternian winds with the Icon Heroes Masters of the Universe He-Man Mini Bust Paperweight! Based on the 1980’s Filmation television series, He-Man wields his power sword atop a Castle Grayskull tower base defying evil. Designed and sculpted by Joe Amaro and the Four Horsemen, this complete piece comes with sheath and Master of the Universe logo. Cast in high quality polystone, the He-Man Mini Bust Paperweight stands approximately 12 inches tall from the bottom of the base to the tip of the Power Sword. This makes a great addition to any desktop or Masters of the Universe collection. Available September 2013. SRP $60.

We were lucky enough to chat with Nate Baersch, designer of the Icon Heroes Castle Grayskull a couple days ago, and it’s a special treat for us to chat today with Joe Amaro, who designed and sculpted this mini-bust in collaboration with the Four Horsemen. Joe is noted in the collectibles community for his MOTU-inspired creations, like his Manta Raider collaboration with Rudy Obrero. His professional credentials include a stint at Jazwares. Joe was gracious enough to answer our questions about the mini-bust and some of his other projects.

Q&A with Nate Baertsch, Designer of the Icon Heroes Castle Grayskull

heroic 1

You may know him as Baena at many of the toy and collectible forums, but Nate Baertsch is also an accomplished illustrator, and happens to be one of the designers behind the Icon Heroes Castle Grayskull Polystone Environment. Nate recently got one of the Icon Heroes Castles off the production line, shared these pictures, and kindly answered some of our questions.

AFP: How did you get involved with Icon Heroes for this project?

Nate: Dumb luck! Okay, that’s not entirely true. I’ve had a good working relationship with the Four Horsemen since somewhere around 2007? I started out doing packaging art for their Seventh Kingdom line. Ramathorr was the first painting I did for them, and to this day still one of my favorites.  Over time my work with them has increased from packaging artwork for their figures, to occasional design sketches and concepts for figures for the variety of lines that they work on. Over time, and meeting up with them when I could at conventions, we’ve established a good working relationship and friendship, as we all love all things MotU and general super fantastical spacey geeky goodness. A lot of “geeking out” about MotU lore, Seventh Kingdom, their other properties, Outer Space Men and now Power Lords!

MattyCollector 2013 Subscriptions Re-Opened for the Rest of April

MattyCollector 2013 Subscriptions

If you somehow missed the months and months the 2013 Mattel subscriptions were available last year and were hoping to jump on board, now’s your chance. Mattel has opened up those subs for the rest of this month, and you’ll get all the remaining figures for the year for each, from May onwards. I know there’s people who were swayed by the unending hysteria during the sales period that the subscriptions were at risk, and bought into multiple subs – I imagine some of these folks would rather jump off instead.

But hey, no Club exclusives for Masters of the Universe Classics and DC Universe Classics, but there’s a lot more of the selections revealed, and less funds committed. And this is another chance to pick up the Club Filmation half-year sub, which did have a relatively short subscription period, compared to the rest. Mattel talks about a limited amount of subs available – I’ll be curious to see if they do sell out of any. Here are the links to all the MattyCollector subscriptions.

Masters of the Universe Classics Club Eternia – Map of Subternia Viewer

It’s becoming a tradition – each year when the Club Eternia exclusives ship, I publish one of the more popular posts on AFP – the map viewer for the Club Eternia exclusive map. This year, Mattel shipped the Map of Subternia with the club exclusive King He-Man. I even got a 24 cent refund for being overcharged for the map shipment. A thousand more of those and I’ll have saved up enough for Castle Grayskull! 😉

  • Position your mouse over areas of the map to magnify it.
  • To zoom in or out, scroll up or down with your mousewheel.

Big thanks again to my wife, who made this possible again this year. Enjoy exploring Subternia, and be sure to visit our previous installments:
