DC Universe Classics Cosmic Odyssey

Cosmic Odyssey - group.jpg

I’ve often joked that Mattel and the Four Horsemen created the DC Universe Classics line so they could make every character from the epic comic from Jim Starlin and Mike Mignola that is Cosmic Odyssey – but seeing all these figures together, spanning the entire life to-date of this toy line, you have to admit that I may be onto something. The very first wave of the line gave us Batman, Etrigan, and Orion. That’s THREE out of the five figures in the first wave, all from Cosmic Odyssey!

And in the very first year of the DC subscription, the club exclusive figure is Metron – the New God whose quest for knowledge about the Anti-Life equation serve as the catalyst for the events in Cosmic Odyssey. Admit it – you think I’m right!

DC Universe Classics Atrocitus and Metron and Masters of the Universe Classics Horde Prime and Griffin on Sale 6/15

A few Mattel posts tonight – first off, a reminder that this Friday is the sale date for June, with a couple big hitters for DC and Masters. I’m looking forward to getting my Metron (only available with the Club Infinite Earths subscription or in the after-market) to add to my Cosmic Odyssey display. Atrocitus will need some creative posing to make him more imposing.

As far as Masters, the Griffin is awesome, but I’m not sure if I can make room for him or the other sub figures (Horde Prime and Snake Man-At-Arms) this month.

The Voltron Green Lion is also on sale, but I really wonder how many folks are going a la carte for Voltron – probably just the folks who found out about the subscription after pre-orders had closed out.

Here’s the link for the bundle page for the 6/15 sale, for your convenience. Happy shopping!

Toy Fair 2012 – DC Universe Classics Report

DCU Club Infinite Earths (25) (1280x1280).jpg

Mattel held its annual Collector Night at New York Toy Fair yesterday, and we were on site to take pictures of the latest and greatest figures to be revealed across their collector-oriented lines. We’ll cover most of that over the next few days, but I did want to post what we has spawned from one of our favorite lines – DC Universe Classics.

So in this update, I’ll be covering the DC Universe Club Infinite Earths subscription, the retail-based DC Universe All-Stars, DC Universe Classics 2-Packs (Toys ‘R Us exclusive), Batman Legacy, and the 6-inchers revealed from the Movie Masters line for The Dark Knight. If you’re a fan of 6-inch DC action figures, there’s still plenty of stuff coming our way this year!

Mattel Sneak Peek at 2012 DC Universe All-Stars Relaunch

Mattel provided a tiny sneak peek on MattyCollector.com at what’s in store for retail in 2012. DC Universe Classics will be relaunched as DC Universe All-Stars, picking up the tag for re-released figures in the Classics line that came with stands instead of Collect and Connect pieces. It’s a fitting name, since we’re seeing a re-release with Batman Beyond and the removal of the Collect and Connect altogether.

We saw Larfleeze at New York Comic Con, but I’m a little surprised at the rest of the line-up here. I had expected one of the big guns in their updated DCnU looks, since Mattel had referenced DCnU back at San Diego Comic-Con when it announced that it would be revamping its retail line. My for-fun-only theory is that these figures were hold-overs from an unofficially themed wave of Geoff Johns-inspired characters (Larfleeze, Superboy Prime in his Anti-Monitor armor, and Flashpoint Plastic Man are all from comics Johns wrote), and that we’ll see DCnU and Jim Lee-inspired costumes in the next wave.
