SDCC 2015: Mezco One:12 Collective – Awesome Figures, Could Use Some Focus

SDCC 2015 - Mezco One 12 Collective (1 of 18)

Mezco was actually my first stop during Preview Night (if you don’t count the stop on the way at Mondo, to sneak a quick look at the 1/6 scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). I wanted to get there to get my hands on the one of the 150 One:12 Collective Batman / Mutant Leader 2-packs that was on sale for the day. I was lucky and got a set (haven’t had the chance to open it yet), and asked if they had any more figures coming in the line. I was told to look around the corner.

SDCC 2015: Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics – Preview Night

AKA nothing to substantiate the Thundercats rumor other than I’ve heard it too

SDCC 2015 - Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics - Preview Night (1 of 28)

On Preview Night, Mattel left no questions as to what was coming for the rest of the year with Masters of the Universe Classics. They filled in all the blanks through December. But despite them saying that 2015 was the end of an era for Four Horsemen MOTUC, it seems like all marketing communications from the Mattycollector team is that they’ll continue making toys next year. The question is, what?

As I noted my approach to the Convention Center on my Instagram feed, I was asked to seek out Mattel and find the Thundercats / Four Horsemen figures everyone’s been talking about. While there’s a pretty active rumor about that, there was no evidence of it in the Mattel booth. Of course, they’d save that up for their Mattypalooza panel on Friday. By then, we’ll know what is coming from Matty in 2016.

SDCC 2015: Mondo 1/6 Scale TMNT May Just Be Best in Show this Year

SDCC 2015 - Mondo One Sixth Scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1 of 20)

I didn’t know much about Mondo for long before Comic-Con – their foray into figures had been limited to a much-favored Iron Giant figure, but it’s been mired in production complications and delayed. I think their upcoming foray into 1/6 scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will shine an even bigger spotlight on them. From this first look at the prototypes, I think they’ve nailed the designs and how to put together a compelling package – and the more simplified (and reusable) sculpts, compared to the Iron Giant, will make the TMNT line a much smoother production.

SDCC 2015: Hasbro Marvel Legends – Preview Night

SDCC 2015 - Hasbro Marvel Legends - Preview Night (1 of 18)

It’s Preview Night at San Diego Comic-Con, and one of my first stops was the Hasbro booth to check in on Marvel Legends. Hasbro has spent a little to upgrade the display cases throughout its booth, with clear glass cases and spotlights that provide dramatic backlighting that is bright enough to allow for clear pictures. This comes at the trade-off of less display space. What the Marvel team put out on Preview Night was mostly what we had seen and heard about at Toy Fair. But there were a few figures that we saw in person for the first time, and a couple of ones that snuck out that were surprises.
